Sooo, what's up with Prescott??

Old news for some, but new news for me. Found out today that the Prescott MIGHT not work with current i875 boards. 🙁 That is a real bummer considering I bought my Asus board about 5-6 weeks ago hoping that I would be able to upgrade in the future. I REALLY hope that the Prescott will be compatible so that I have the option to upgrade to that core or not on the same mobo.

If the 478 pin Prescott is compatible with current i875 boards, then maybe I'll upgrade to the fastest 478 pin Prescott available until they move to 775 pin socket T....OR should I wait and upgrade to the 775 pin socket T for the Prescott/Tejas with the Grantsdale chipset in Q2 2004? Grantsdale is going to be one badassed chipset; supporting DDRII at 533/400 and PCI express. NICE! Starting speeds will be 3.20GHz, 3.4Ghz, and 3.6Ghz I believe.

Also, what's the deal with the new VIN 1.5 specification? I believe I have that correct.

If anyone has any thoughts and/or updates about the 478 pin Prescott, let me know please.

Thanks and take care

yeah i bought my ic7 with teh prescott in mind but later on i thought i'd need another 875/65 for the ol' 2.4c

so i'm just gonna buy a new prescott with a motherboard thats built for it.....its not like intels are as cheap as the (now old) amd processors

Actually, there are some boards that can support Prescott. For example, your ASUS board may, and a Gigabyte board may, but an MSI, Epox, ABIT (possibly), and basically all others will not.

Correct. The current rumors are that the first batch of Prescotts will be quite iffy on current motherboards. But as Intel revises it (reduces power leaks) there will be a second round of Prescotts that will work in many more of the current motherboards.

I actually heard a rumor that they may skip the 478 pin prescotts altogether and go straight to the LGA775.
So im actually going to hold off on purchasing any mobo or cpu till they state the beef.

Start from the beginning of the Prescott article. No reason to start at the second page of the benchmark.
Actually, one should start with the realization that if they do have a Prescott, it is a pre-release stepping... And not a very good indicator of final performance.

No different than when some sites posted benchmarks of a premature Opteron.
