Sooo I'm pretty sure my house has lead paint

Basically, we're getting the house remodeled and theres paint chips on the ground, etc.
(I'm in high school and living at home)

This house was built a while back (many years before the law requiring less lead paint in residential homes)
Also, the owner of our home, before selling it, was apparently supposed to notify us if there was lead paint in the house, and he/she didn't

I'm trying to tell my parents that this isn't good and that we should check up on the paint and see what's up with it, but they keep telling me if you don't eat it, it's fine
I'm saying that if you breathe it in, it's just as bad

What do I do

When was the house built?

Before the SF earthquake of 1906

Well then... don't eat the chips if the paint flakes off. You've lived with it this long, if it was going to do anything to you it would have happened by now.

But before this, all the paint was intact and not peeling/cracking
Now, there's chips all over the ground and dust in the air

I wouldn't worry about it, unless you are foolish enough to pay someone to demolish your home & move the rubbish to a toxic waste site.

Most if not all municipalities is okay with leaded paint, and remodeling only require fresh paint over top of the old leaded paint (also a common practice for government facilities).

Side note: Asbestos is very expensive to get rid off, therefore it is acceptable to cover it up with paint or any approve building materials.

Well that's not true.. It accumulates in your body and causes mental problems. It doesn't kill you.

AFAIK, it's ok if you don't eat it. Having it in the air during remodelling is probably bad. You're inhaling all that dust. If I were you I'd contact some inspector for the city and get them to talk to your parents.

Please educate yourself on lead paint. Cracking, peeling will not release any lead into the air. As long as you don't eat it, there is no issue.

Well I don't know about you, but sometimes when I'm hungry late at night and I just don't feel like running downstairs to get something out of the fridge, I just grab the hammer I keep next to my bed and dent the wall a little and start peeling.

........

Just keep some midnight snacks around and you'll be fine. Lead is heavy, it doesn't get airborne very easily.

we had lead paint for years. its safe as long as you do not eat it. If you are in high school i am sure you are smart enough to avoid doing that.

if you are worried when remodeling wear a mask.

I don't mean cracking / peeling is gonna kill me (That's just the start of the deterioration of the paint in the house). I'm saying that the fact that there's some paint dust in the air and dust / chips littering the ground that'll harm me (maybe, that's what I'm really wondering about).
