Is there one almighty idiot with a really powerful position at Sony, or is stupidity part of the corporate culture there?

Both HD-DVD and BR should be embarassed at the way things have gone. There's absolutely no excuse for a disc not to play correctly.

Agreed. There is absolutely no reason that my 4 year old DVD player shouldnt be able to play a new DVD. Saying that the hardware should be updated, bullshit.

I would support anyone who decided to download a movie after purchasing it, having it not work, and returning it to the store for a full refund. I hope that scenario plays out a bunch. In fact, I hope it gets to the point where a person gets so frustrated in not knowing if a DVD will work or not that they start downloading everything.

Can they even use the DVD Video logo if they're using non-standard functionality that is not supported by all DVD players?

Not that anyone looks for the logo before buying, but perhaps in the future we'll have to.

At this rate, in another 10 years, each new movie release will come packaged with its own sophisticated player, complete with a 3-billion-transistor processor just to process the increasingly complex encryption schemes.

I don't imagine they'll stop until a court forces them, and it won't happen while dvds are still a relevant medium.

I know a lot of companies had to quit using the Compact Disc logo after they started putting DRM on their discs. It probably depends on how much the patent holder for the format fusses.

I actually do look for the CD logo when buying these days, not that there is a lot worth buying when it comes to current music. :p

There's no real standard like there was with the CD audio standard, so DRMing your DVDs won't prevent you from using the logo.

And it will take less than 24 hours for some 15 year old kid from the Netherlands to crack it and post it on Bit Torrent.

Maybe because Blu-ray consists of more than just Sony. Should I boycott regular DVD's because of Sony Pictures movies?
