Sony VAIO: no audio through HDMI port?

Exactly as the title states. Tried watching some of my Blu-ray movies on my HDTV to make sure I was satisfied with the results before I sold my PS3. Image quality was pretty good, but there was no audio when using hdmi as the playback device. According to windows, the sigmatel high definition audio codec is installed correctly and the hdmi port shows up as a playback device, but it's grayed out and apparently is not connected even though I'm watching the movie on the tv fine. It also says the device is working properly.

The hdmi port is obviously working because I have video but why would it say there was no hdmi device connected for audio?

I got this laptop for cheap and it has capable hardware, but $ony has done everything it possibly can to make me regret purchasing it. Getting this thing fully functional on a clean install of retail Vista 32bit and windows 7 64bit without using the drivers off the $ony website (most of which are over a year old and are the orginal shipping drivers) has been one of the most tedious and unenjoyable experiences in my 10 years of system building. And people complain about microsoft's DRM.

I'm fairly certain the problem is somehow related to this, but everything looks ok, windows just doesn't think anything is connected to the hdmi port for audio.

Its very likly that the sound is not conencted to the HDMI port. Some laptops don't have any audio threw the HDMI port.

Haha. I certainly hope this is not the case. Seems pretty counter-intuitive, but I guess this would not surprise me a single bit at this point. Thanks for the heads up.

@matt2 and mpilchfamily

I have exactly the same problem, but a little different history. 2 years ago I bougth a Vaio VGN-AR61E with Nvidia 8400 M GT with a HDMI-output and Windows Vista preinstalled. The HDMI-Output worked perfectly (video AND audio (DTS, AC3 etc.).
Now I installed Windows 7 on a new partition and I get exactly the same problem.
video works fine, but no audio. Soundmanager in controlpanel tells me "Digital Audio(HDMI) Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec; Not connected"

Although the vista drivers installed just fine under Windows 7 I can't get it to work so it seems that I got stuck with Vista...

Matt have you found a solution to this problem?

I ran into a similar issue and found that actually my tv had SPDIF as the default for audio input even when a HDMI was plugged in and active.

So even though it would read the video fine, it was ignoring the audio stream. I manually disabled the SPDIF and the audio came in fine through the HDMI.

Don't know if that's your issue hope this helps.

@rerednaw
doesn't really help, but thank you.
When starting Vista on the same machine, it works from the scratch, so the problem is not my AV-Receiver.
What is funny is that in Vista the connected device is detected as my Phillips Flat TV and with Win7 its "AVAMP".
best regards
