Wow, some people don't read so well. Here is my post from 12/15:

Ok, I have a report on an HP Omnibook 500 that I ordered from gpscomputers.com

On August 23, I placed an order with them for the really thin, really cool HP Omnibook, after debating whether or not to do so for about a week. The lowest price I could find anywhere else was $1000, and they were offering for $500. The setup -- hp omnibook 500, 600 mhz, 10gb, 128mb, nic, expansion base. Sounded too good to be true, but I figured I'm paying with paypal, so there is some protection (although I've heard horror stories about this being quite the contrary).

At first, I thought that it was handled pretty well. I sent an order to the owner of the place, "Terry Holmes", asking him some questions about it and verifying that the price was real. Then I placed the order on their website, and payment was easy by paypal directly linked on their order form. The strange thing was that I received no order confirmation for a few days, so I gave them a call. They said that they issue order numbers 7 to 10 days after receiving the order, so I decided to wait a little while longer.

After two weeks, I began to get impatient, and I called them again, asking what was going on. The service rep "Shirley" told me that they were extremely behind on these orders, and I'd be getting my order at the end fo the month (September).

Well, repeat this process for about three months (note that while I call them approximately 2x per week, they did not even once reply by email or phone) up until last week (December 5). I finally got annoyed enough, and worried about losing my money enough to write them an email asking for my money back, and threatening to report this to the BBB, local prosecutor, and state attorney's office. Then I got an email saying it would be shipped next week. Ok, yeah right, I think, another delay tactic. Note that all through these three months, the only reason I don't go through on this action is because I really would like this laptop, want to give them a chance, and because I can actually talk to someone in their office, and they appear to have a real address.

To my surprise, the next week it actually arrived! And not just the laptop I ordered, but the newest, coolest, most function packed hp omnibook 500 that you can get right now. It's got wireless lan, 30gb(!), 256 ram, and it's the 750mhz model. I mean it took 3 months, but it was damn worth the wait.

I'll tell you a little bit about the box and labels, because that's as informative as anything. The laptop came in what appears to be the standard HP packing, absolutely new off the shelf, unopened. The label on the inner box was from Taiwan, HP factory. However, this was in an outer box with packing peanuts, and the strange thing is, the outer box didn't come from gpscomputers -- it came from PcMall in Memphis, TN (while gps computers is in ohio).

I don't know if I would order from them again, or suggest anyone else ordering from them. While I got what I wanted (and more) from them in the end, this might easily have ended up the other way. And I only let $500 of my money go into limbo this way for 3 months, I would certainly hesitate at any larger sum of money.

Who knows if this is legit?

How do you create a poll in the original thread? I just want to know who's jumping on this deal so that I can make a better judgement for myself. I thought it might be some useful information to us all.

Oh well ... didn't mean to disturb the peace....

Looks like GPS is padding comments in reselling ratings.

I used their toll-free number - 877-389-0949 and pressed 21 for Lisa and 27 for Terry. Never had a real problem reaching them and when I did, they were most helpful. A friend of mine just ordered a notebook from them too, so I hope she doesn't experience a problem like others here. I also found Yahoo messenger to be a helpful tool.

Hope this helps...

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not a so-called "business" to do business with. I paid for an item on Aug. 7th and never recieved it. After a fortune in phone calls and ton of unanswered emails, I finally, after some research was able to contact an indiviual in this town to my luck had a considerable amount of clout and was a savior in my behalf, that went to their establishment and questioned the "president" Terry Holmes of his intentions of my order. This person then contacted me by email and told me that this was not in his mind a retail seller of parts as none were on display and that all the did was salvage and refurbish old computers and from his conversation with the owner it was unlikely that I would not recieve my motherboard. He has burned a number of customers on UBid as well. I contacted PayPal and they also confronted him. It took a month for me to finally get my money back and another 3 days to transfer it back to my account. PLEASE, PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!! STEVE WARREN

I am a consumer who recently purchased 2 laptops from GPS Computer Services LTD in Vermilion, OH. I must say that I have been very pleased with the service I have received and in just 2 weeks received BOTH laptops! They were brand new, never opened/registered, and everything that they were described to be. Terry Holmes and his staff (Lisa in particular) were very courteous and kind and went above and beyond what I had expected after reading the postings here.

I was concerned that there could be a delay in receiving the laptops, but realistically, the laptops I bought were $1000 or so BELOW retail! It would have been well worth the wait to me to have saved that much on each of them.

With a little patience, everything worked out wonderfully! GPS is a legitimate business which I think may be experiencing a few growing pains, but if you take the time to really research them, you will see that Mr. Holmes is an honest businessman delivering a quality line of products at tremendous savings to the consumer. Even in the instances noted here, he offered refunds and concessions to the buyers.

Look GPS up on InfoUSA and look at their business rating - you can even get their credit rating (which is very good). Give them a little room to grow and watch them flourish. I am glad that I gave them the chance to redeem themselves, and hope you do the same.

lol... some one call pc mall and find out if they have been missing some laptops. Ask for a manager, and tell them the whole story.. i bet they forward you to someone higher up. We should get to the bottom of this, and see if they are legit or not. Its possible that they are a mass group buy service in descise. But, still. ALL of their laptops are 500 bucks, no matter what the retail price is... kinda fishy. Even then, I wonder how they have been in bussiness for more than 3 months doing fraud, and from a real adress. Right now, my bets on fraud.

well one thing's for sure, GPS isn't trying to make money selling this laptop and the price marked isn't a mistake/typo, so what are they up to?

it's not legit unless you wait three months, called 3 times a week while waiting, and then threaten with lodging a complaint with the BBB... .then it's legit... other than that it's not legit... $500 bucks to wait 3 months just doesn't seem worth it. but if they want to pay me $500 to wait 3 months : )

You gotta wonder....

After looking at the reciept in Verby's pix, I called PC Mall and the one in the receipt went for $1848.99........... also found that the lowest price they could sell 500 of the FX340K was for $1400.00 a piece.......

Smells stanky to me.....

If you send them your money..... good luck........

You know, all it would take is them buying one laptop for every person who threatened them with legal action. Even at 1500 bucks a pop, if they took $500 from 4 other people who didn't complain, they'd make a tidy profit.

This does look like a total scam. Here is the important information from the order status at pcmall:

The total for the laptop was : $ 1807.24
with shipping of $ 41.75
order was planced on 12/13 and payment was a wire tansfer on 12/13

So, I don't know how you can pay to drop ship a $1900 laptop for $ 500. I think 1 or 2 high profile load people get their laptops and the rest lose.

Order Date 12/13/01

Also, why the packing slip doesn't show unit or extended price is that because that bill to and ship to are different, the warehouseing software thinks it's a gift and doesn't print the prices on the packing slip. WFL = warehouse floor location. It's where in the warehouse (at pcmall) the laptop is, so the pickers and find it and pack it. The phone number being the same is a quirk in the software. If there is no other phone number for the ship-to is defaults to the bill to phone num.

This has to be a scam.

ps. i don't work for pcmall, but my old job was supporring the same software package for a different catalog company. The packing slip and ordernumber are very distinct for this software.

Well I have been debating this one now for a while. I am a gambling man so I said lets give it a try and if they don't come through I will cause a sh$* Load of comotion. So I orderd the Sony Vaio for $500.00 yesterday. Today I already started to second guess my self so I said lets call these people because they have not sent me a conformation letter yet. So I called. I reached the Customer Service Manager Shirley. She seemed to be a nice women since she kept her cool as I was digging into them with strong statments and so forth. She told me that they get these good of prices because they order way more then 500 at a time. She said the get about 2400 orders a day! That sounds like to many to me but thats what she said. Then she said that they sell to the BBB and the local government and all the schools around the Ohio area. She specificly mentioned the Police Department buying from them! Then I asked her to look up my order and she first said she does not see it. Then she said let me go ask the infamous "Terry" I guess the owner or President. She then came back to me and said oh we do have it your Joe From California right. I said yep. So then I asked a big thing from her. I asked if she could "PROMISE" a legit time period when I will for sure have this laptop in my hands! She said no problem and I may post this promise anywhere I would like and her name. She "Promised me to have my Sony Vaio laptop in my hands at the max 40 days! She most likley I will have it in 30 days but just in case she said 40 days max is guarenteed. I also told her if she breaks this promise and either scams me or extends this out for 3 months I will bring them down if it takes everything in my will to do it. She started laughing and said don't worry you will have your order and withen the time frame I promised. So If they are selling to the BBB and local governments and stuff is it possible that they are turning their heads to any kind of crime? Or if they are really getting that many orders a day to get such a low cost on these? I will keep you all posted lets all hope I get mine with no hassels and if I don't will you all help me bring them down some way? If any of you have any things you recomend me to say to them next time to give them a little presure please let me know. Thanks all, Gwindel

OK, let's put this into perspective: You believe that they receive 2400 orders a day, but that "Joe from California" is a valid record in their database. Furthermore, it takes 30-40 days to accumulate enough orders to bulk order 500 items (But wait, how can it take a month to accumulate 500 orders when they get 2400 a day?!?). Finally, you believe the references that the police department, BBB, schools, and governement all get their equipment from this place, even though they can't provide valid delivery dates (not a snowball's chance here). Let's not forget the 100s of claims against them that the BBB has record of already. If you've managed to make it through this thread and honestly expect to be treated well from this company then you have it coming to you.
