I think this was mentioned, but I'm interested enough in it that I want a thread dedicated to it:

Another convertible tablet/laptop where the "laptop" is the main focus (read: can't ditch the keyboard). The screen convertible design is a bit different than anything seen so far though, which I think is done fairly well.

Sony page shows a very large range of customization options at varying price points, but here's some highlights:

  • Available in 13", 14", and 15"
  • All screens are at least 1080p, but the 15" has an option for 2880x1620
  • 15" also has option for Nvidia 735M graphics
  • Both the 14" and 15" can be equipped with larger capacity hybrid HDDS, but the 13" only has SSD options (up to 512gigs at a huge premium)
  • All include an active digitizer, but the pen is sold separately (or part of a bundle)
  • Chassis is almost all aluminum
  • Keyboard is backlit

You can customize your own, but they have some pre-made models priced already. I imagine this is the type of stuff we'll see in stores. All of them say "accepting pre-orders now" but only one has an expected ship date on it... and based on the formatting I'm not sure it's supposed to be on there. Still, expected ship date of Nov 19. I've been in the market for a while now, and this is currently the front runner for me. I've wanted something more laptop focused but still with a digitizer if I want to take notes or something, and there's very little options out there for me. Given the wide range of sizes and price points I think I can get one I'm happy with.

doesn't lenovo have the same concept as Sony. I think the convertible laptops will take a bit more abuse. Sony's have been pretty fragile while lenovo's are built pretty good.

Why pay $800 for a premium notebook and $300 for a light tablet when you can pay $1600 for a notebook that acts as a tablet with a boat anchor attached to the back?

Different strokes for different folks. I personally need something that's mostly a laptop, but every once in a while I like to just sit back and browse without typing. When I'm doing so I'm not standing, so the weight isn't an issue. I also haven't found a low priced tablet that gives me what I want. I have a Nexus 7 and it collects dust because it's clunky and I can't make longer forum posts with a touch screen.

In case anybody cares, I was at Best Buy yesterday and they had several models of this in stock. Very nice device and probably my front runner for next laptop.

Because you can't do any graphics or photo work on a $300 tablet

Also available in 11" now I notice. If it was available in my market it might be a nice backup to my Duo 13.

I still really like them, but with the impending shutdown of the Vaio line I'm just glad I didn't jump on one and lose any chance of future support or fixes.

Chyeah, like there was support worth a damn in the first place :p

VAIO support has to be if not the worst, then among the worst - can't get worse IMO than what it is. As long as I don't actually get a lemon or if the notebook actually has design issues (and TMK neither the Duos or the Flips have any really obvious issues), I'm still pretty OK with buying a VAIO now. In fact if the Flip 11 does by some chance make it to my shores I'm definitely picking one up.
