Was at Best Buy for $1250. not listed on their site yet.

16"
Core i7 2nd gen.
Nividia 540 (i think).
USB 3.0
750gb toshiba HDD (rpm unknown).
1920 x 1080 matte screen

specs are about perfect. just curious about Sony. have never owned one, but i think they have a lot of their own weird proprietary goofyness?

What else is similar? 17" is sort of too big, 15.6" will do I guess, does not have to be 1920x1080, but higher than 1366x768 please. USB 3.0 is nice, so is a matte screen.

Are thinkpads better machines? can spend more..

What are you looking to do with this? Do you game? Do you just watch HD video and surf the web? Are you a graphic designer? Do you program? Why do you think that 16" is best? Are you looking to travel around with this?

Depending on your needs, a $500 laptop will do just as nicely as a $1500 one. Why do you need a 2nd-gen core i7 (aside from just wanting it)? Do you need all the HDD space? Why the GT 540M? Why not something with SB core i5 and Geforce GT 550M like this guy here?

And do you need this laptop now? Starting around the second half of July, there will be several back-to-school sales. Couple that w/ AMD's Llano/Sabine platform rolling out as we speak, there should be a lot more deals come in about a month or so. The Vaio is a nice enough machine, but the pricing is not the greatest, I'd say wait a bit.

very little gaming. video work, medical stuff, HD video.

built-in HD graphics would be fine, can't seem to find anything that fits, higher-end machines seem to all have the high-end graphics.

Had bad luck with 2 Asus machines, may not want to try again.
 
I don't know how set you are on a sandy bridge, but there was a really good deal on that Vaio F laptop with a previous gen i7-740QM.

As for alternatives, a very popular recommendation is the Dell XPS 15 with its excellent 1080P display. Personally, that's what I'm getting. But that one has a glossy screen.

Go down to the C series of Vaio, it's not only cheaper but you can get them with 14 or 15.5" screens of varying resolution (optionally a 1080p on the 15, matte). This is currently rather high on my list of laptops right now.

the 15.5 C series with HD screen does look nice. HD screen is $50..nice. thanks.
