Wow, that sexy VAIO mp3 player that was crippled by it's lack of native mp3 support now not only has a firmware update that gives it native mp3 support (finally), but has a sexy sexy price drop to go with it.

Best of all it's being offered with the remote control and dock thrown in for free, which makes this even hotter, since Apple has become rather cheap bastards lately even with their high end ipods-the iPod photo 30GB doesn't come with a dock or a remote. If you wanted those accessories they're a whopping $80 more, and you'd still be 10GB short of this Sony.

At this price I'd definitely get this instead of the ipod photo, especially since I've wanted this for a while but it used to be even more money than the ipods. Now that it's $180 cheaper than a similarly equipped ipod photo with 10GB less storage it's a no brainer.

Right. Hit ecost.com and search for VAIO mp3. You'll only get 2 results, and can probably figure out which of those 2 is the one you are looking for.

Yeah sorry about that, it's at ecost.com and the model number (which I didn't know there was a model number since ecost just calls it the vaio mp3 player and far as I know there's actually only one line of vaio mp3 players) is VGF-AP1L, the L meaning that it's the 40GB model. Can't wait to get mine, been running out of space on my 3rd gen ipod.

"usb 2.05" is sony's name for a mini usb port

just like they call their mini firewire port s400 which lacks power rails

Reviews are very bad. The software sucks, and the devices seem to be very unreliable (or the same guy posts on multiple sites). Anyone know if the mic is good? I need a device to record lectures. :(

Is it just a plain piece-of-plastic-with-a-few-buttons remote, or a neato LCD remote? Backlit? Can it do USB Mass Storage? If it can't, does the Sony software support pulling MP3's back out of the device? (My Karma supports it). Does it do proper gapless playback? What kind of an EQ system does it have?

This is seriously tempting, especially given how much residual value my Karma still has.. but I'd hate to give up playback capabilities for space and sexiness.

I've tried to find info on it, but all I find is reviews on consumer rating sites.

It seems the software, sonicstage is quite bad. But for this price, I think I will put up with whatever software they require of me. Nice find OP.

Ecost has it now for 229.....so I picked it up and a pair of MDR-EX71 headpohones ( I already have a pair for about 14 months and love them, but just wanted a new pair for a new device). I read some good reviews on cnet and amazon, along with a few bad ones. The only thing with ecost is that for some reason the links on their site weren't working all the time, but I deleted part of the URL and that worked.

Hi guys,

I just got this player for my birthday. I have to say that it is really good. Much superior to iPod or whatever you call it. ^_^.

http://www.siliconpopculture.com/review/101_0_2_0_M/

This link is the link to the review site which has lots of picture and nice details on the ins and outs of this player.

A little summary on the ups of the player comparing to iPod:
Better sound quality (much better) (EQ options are simple but should be adequate for the norms)
MUCH better LCD (we are talking another level of crisp, big LCD screen)
Lyric view
Accessories (the remote has a LCD too)

Get one yourself from eCost. Oh you might want to pay $10 for next day shipping because they won't charge you $3.95 handling (which means $10-$4 = $6 next day) not bad at all.

the slilcon pop culture review answers your data storage question.

althogh it isn't a psp, I read some user review on cnet or pricegrabber that there may be another firmware upgrade that may support games, but probably not like a PSP. don't take my word, though, about 4 hours ago I didn't know this thing existed and would have bought that 20GB new sony MP3 player for around 300$.

Do you need to hack this thing to be an external HDD? I read some reviews that it can be done, but no instructions on how to do that.
