DLS 10" Sub

Do you guys think I'll hear much of difference if I get the Sony? The $99 DLS is pretty highly regarded at the Home Theater Forum.
Not having owned both of them, it's kind of hard for me to say. However, the DLS is a good sub. You may experience little, if any benefit by going to the Sony sub. Are you currently happy with your DLS? If yes, then don't upgrade. If you're going to upgrade, the "upgrade" in the major sense - go to something built with a 15" driver such as the Dayton DVC or the Tempest driver. Then, there's also the HSU subs which are getting great responses and reviews. Finally, there's the SVS subwoofers which, from what I've read are very, very impressive.

The Tempeset / Dayton DVC options that I listed run about $300 and up - depending on whether you make the cabinet yourself, or have it constructed. The HSU subs can be had for $500 - $900 and the SVS subs will run you $450 to $1000 or so. Personally, I wouldn't trade a $99 subwoofer for a $129 Sony subwoofer - unless you receive a good price for your DLS sub. Don't lose major money on this upgrade. Also, if you're serious about getting big improvements from your upgrade process, then spending another $500 to get into the league that I've described above might be in order. ;)

You can't just swap a woofer from Dayton or Adire and expect it to perform in your current boxes. The Audiosource is a ported enclosure and the Sony is ported as well I believe. The specifications for each sub are different. The Daytons and Temptests/Shivas/Brahmas and all different subs have different specs for boxes. So it might sound decent, but you are definitely not getting what the sub was designed to produce. If I were to get a temptest, I'd just run a box tuning program and get the specs to perfectly match the sub, then build the enclosure to suit the driver. You need to always check the specs first.

Re-read his post. He's not asking about swapping the drivers - he currently has an assembled DLS 10" subwoofer in an enclosure provided by Dayton. He's asking if he would see any improvement if he were to get rid of his DLS subwoofer & enclosure and move on to the Sony subwoofer. My response to him was suggesting some alternative subs where he would get more of an improvement if he were to go from his current DLS sub to a better subwoofer a little further up the food chain. Nobody was talking about putting different drivers in any of the current enclosures. ;)

Well then, I guess I'll stay put. I like the little DLS :)

So, are there any other good deals with 2000 points?

I had the Sony SA-WM40, but returned it in favor of the Audiosource SW-15. The Audiosource has been one @ss-kicking sub. I modified mine by lining the walls with polyfill and tomorrow, my Dayton 15" DVC driver will be arriving. Time to knock some more drywall off the walls. ;)

For the price, the AudioSource 15 would definitely kill the Sony. I was gonna get this Sony, but got the audiosource instead. Filled it up w/ sound deadening and polyfill. Holy $hit!!! It's unbelievable. the 15" will drive way deeper than the 12" plus it just sounds better in general. Us few AudioSource owners can never convince some of these people that it is clearly superior to even $500+ subs :)

I have mine hooked up to a Denon AVR-1602 with Sony F600H floor stand speakers, and some cheap satellites that need to be replaced. Even with this setup, its sounds unbelievable.
Even though it might be going against the specs a little, you ought to see how well the Dayton 15" DVC performs in the Audiosource cabinet with the provided Audiosoure amp and the additional polyfill. I just made this modification a few days ago - and it's quite impressive. So far, I have $250 into my Audiosource sub including the addition of the Dayton DVC driver.

If anyone is considering the purchase of the Audiosource SW-15, then don't forget to check the auction sites out. Another individual who I know sold his sub on one a few weeks back for $105 + shipping. Not a bad deal at all.

How much better is it? even with the incorrect parameters? I melted my vc a few weeks ago and was thinkin about getting a tempest. But Audiosource was nice enough to send me a new woofer and fix my amp for free. The first woofer they sent me was broken as the magnet was attached crooked..hehe. So now I have 2 busted 15" subs :-D

Im pretty much done spending on home audio. Now saving up for that 15" Brahma for my car. :)

The SA-WM40 is definitely a great sub, especially with the polyfill, but I'm looking to move up and buy something bigger and better.

If anyone is looking for a pre-modded sub, I've got one for sale in the FS/T forum.

Fwiw I've had this sub for probably over a year now (had a nice jbl....until the amp died like happened to apparently 1/2 the other owners of that model) and I think its an awesome deal for the price.

BTW, has anyone found a way to check on order status on that sony site? There *is* an order "History" page but there's no information about what's going on with the darn thing...

where do i buy polyfill?
Wal-Mart sells bags of polyfill back in their crafts section. I've had better luck using sheets of polyfill that I've purchased from fabric stores. I've stapled multiple layers of polyfill to the wooden/MDF sides of a subwoofer for subs. When you jam wads of polyfill into a sub cabinet, you have to watch out so that the power transformer for the amplifier doesn't get covered. Using the sheets with staples ensures that this device doesn't get covered.

I got it for about $2/bag at Walmart. I debated between getting the sheets (which ran at least $5/bag) versus the loose kind. Reading how most people didn't have any problems with the loose kind, I opted for that and it worked very well. I basically broke off a piece similar size to the side of the sub and just stuffed it in there. It pretty much stayed where I crammed it in. :)

Anyway, I just did this mod last week, and seeing how no one has any pics (although I've read tons of written instructions), I decided to do a photo log of the process. Check out my Sony SA-WM40 Polyfil mod page for photos. :)

To anyone fretting they should have bought this. Don't worry about it.

The WM40 is one of the most boomy unaccurate subs I've ever listened to. It's almost unbareable to listen to with music; Terrible transient response.

For under $200 you can get a much nicer sub.

http://www.adireaudio.com/mobile_audio/drivers/tempest.htm

$150 + build your own enclosure = better SQ and better SPL.

The tempest will eat the sony up. Note the specs. FS=18.8hz, Xmax=16.4mm (one way).

If you don't have the room for a 15", you may want to consider a 12" Image Dynamics IDQv2. They can be had for around $150 at sounddomain.com. They require very little space (.88 cu feet sealed) and go down to 14hz respectively.

Just be glad for the people who wanted it and got in on it, if you don't have anything good to say, (well you know the rest)..... What a thread crapper...

I've owned the following subs:

1) KLH 10"/120 watt subwoofer - which died on about the 29th day of use. This sub was a bit boomy. Then again, I never removed the drive to see if there was any polyfill in it.

2) Sony SA-WM40. When the KLH died, I immediately went to Sears and piced up the Sony. Wow!! What an improvement in sound over the KLH - even without adding any polyfill.

However, my desire to upgrade further and push for even more bass led me to #3:

3) AudioSource SW-15. I picked this up for $155 (shipped) off of Ubid. Considering I had paid about $210 (incl. tax) for the Sony, I moved on the Audiosource and then later returned the Sony. I've modified my Audiosource sub with a fair amount of polyfill sheets stapled to the insides of the enclosure. This procedure quickly quieted the boominess that I was experiencing. Then, a month back, I installed a Dayton 15" DVC driver - which has quite similar specs to the Tempest. For $260 (total), I have a sub that will easily compete with and beat the $600 Velodyne subs sold by Circuit City.

It was only my timing which allowed me to get in a great sub and driver at some rock bottom prices. If it handn't been for these opportunities, I would have still had my Sony SA-WM40 and been quite content.

At $125, I can't believe most people only bought one. These things can by "daisy chained" together. Heck, I would have installed 2 in my room. ;) - because the prices were so great. Sure, the Sony can't get too far below 30 Hz, but, C'mon folks - this is a $125 subwoofer. You can't expect the performance of an SVS, Sunfire or any other sub that will run you $600+ dollars. However, you can use your Sony to its full potential with a few $$ in polyfill stuffing and be completely happy with the performance of the subwoofer. If you get the "upgrade itch" in 6 months or a year from now, you'll still easily get $100+ for this subwoofer on the used market. $125 for this fine sub is a "no brainer."

In regards to people saying this sub "sucks because it's too boomy" - then, I can only say that you need to provide us with the variables that led to your decision to say it "sucks." Throwing out negative one-liners without providing any "facts" or additional "details" only makes the one making these comments look like an idiot.

With that, I will now close out my reply simply by stating that the people who picked up these subs for $125 - shipped directly to their home from Sony received one heck of a deal. And for those purchasers who get irritated with some slimeball chiming in and saying something "sucks" - well, don't let that single comment get you down. For every single "stupid" comment that gets made about the Sony subwoofer, you can read 50 positive comments which will quickly negate the one silly comment made from some mis-informed user. Enjoy your subs! :)

Oh, I just had one small comment that I wanted to add in regards to this Sony subwoofer. The "cost" price of this sub is roughly only $60. My nephew in Florida is neighbors with/friends with a person who has a father in the audio business. My nephew is thinking of getting this sub. When I heard the cost, I jumped all over him for not already owning one. Unfortunately, his room is so full of stuff, he can't go with a pair of them. ;)

I almost got two wje but figured this was a good starting place! How would suggest placing two of these?
