Not having owned both of them, it's kind of hard for me to say. However, the DLS is a good sub. You may experience little, if any benefit by going to the Sony sub. Are you currently happy with your DLS? If yes, then don't upgrade. If you're going to upgrade, the "upgrade" in the major sense - go to something built with a 15" driver such as the Dayton DVC or the Tempest driver. Then, there's also the HSU subs which are getting great responses and reviews. Finally, there's the SVS subwoofers which, from what I've read are very, very impressive.Originally posted by: aldamon
OK, I have my points, now I bought this sub in July:
DLS 10" Sub
Do you guys think I'll hear much of difference if I get the Sony? The $99 DLS is pretty highly regarded at the Home Theater Forum.
The Tempeset / Dayton DVC options that I listed run about $300 and up - depending on whether you make the cabinet yourself, or have it constructed. The HSU subs can be had for $500 - $900 and the SVS subs will run you $450 to $1000 or so. Personally, I wouldn't trade a $99 subwoofer for a $129 Sony subwoofer - unless you receive a good price for your DLS sub. Don't lose major money on this upgrade. Also, if you're serious about getting big improvements from your upgrade process, then spending another $500 to get into the league that I've described above might be in order.![]()
You can't just swap a woofer from Dayton or Adire and expect it to perform in your current boxes. The Audiosource is a ported enclosure and the Sony is ported as well I believe. The specifications for each sub are different. The Daytons and Temptests/Shivas/Brahmas and all different subs have different specs for boxes. So it might sound decent, but you are definitely not getting what the sub was designed to produce. If I were to get a temptest, I'd just run a box tuning program and get the specs to perfectly match the sub, then build the enclosure to suit the driver. You need to always check the specs first.
