Sony Shares Fall on PS3 Performance Issues

Sony is really, really, really blowing it on so many levels.....blu-ray support dwindling, overheating/performance issues, low unit manufacturing count for Xmas, etc, etc, etc.

These performance heating issues could be very serious. Since it's a powerful machine, people could end up with a $500-$600 out-of-warranty paper weight with this first gen. system...

Investors worried about the product after Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson wrote in a report that PlayStation 3 units on display at the Tokyo Game Show about 10 days ago operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset.

"While the reason for this is unknown, we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue," Gibson wrote in the report Monday. "We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production and is clearly negative news for the company."

Don't be so harsh. It won't be a paperweight. It'll be a $500-$600 space heater.

Well they were in enclosures and running a lot more than the average person would have theirs on in their own home I'm guess also.

what does sony expect? from what i understood, the cell CPU requires at minimum 7 cores. so you've got the main one and 7-8 additional specialized cores in a (relatively) tiny case without too much cooling. poor sony.

While I think Sony is misstepping a lot...I think they will ultimately pull it off. I do want them to at least recooperate costs this run...enough to make it worth them making another run at it. Comptetition is key...I don't want MS or Sony taking a sizeable lead. We won't see this incredible increase in technology if we don't have this kind of competition.

That being said, I do think MS really is putting out the superior product once you take all things into account (including price):

1) The graphical capability of the PS3 and X360 appear to be on par with each other. I really think any difference will be ultimately undetectable. Both systems will have games that look equally astonishing.
2) Xbox 360 gives you a litany of choices. A $299 bare bones system that gives you a fully functioning game system that can be upgraded at will. This to me is very price competitive with the Wii while providing significantly better graphics...although a different gameplay experience...we'll see what wins in that arena. After that, you have a value packed premium system that gives you all the Xbox can offer in a still affordable $399 price. Then you have the additional options of an HD-DVD player if that is your fancy....you're not stuck with one if you could care less.
3) The exclusive games that MS has lined up really do entice me. I realize this is very subjective to my tastes...but Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, and Gears of War all look outstanding. I'm also jazzed about Forza 2 and Lost Planet. Dead Rising, GRAW, Oblivion, and Saints Row have all been a blast so far.

3 Things:

1. Entertainment centers don't always offer optimal airflow for cooling either.
2. It shouldn't matter how long a console is on - once it reaches a general temp, it will more or less stay near that. It doesn't just keep on increasing forever. A system should be the same temp whether it is on for 30 minutes or 30 hours.
3. Sony sucks.

This happened with the 360 kiosks too. It's gotten to the point that these machines are simply too hot to keep in those small plastic bubbles.

Wow. It would cost you $200 to make the core system = to the Wii, theres no real comparison. Even most 360 owners recognize the core as useless. Microsoft had a chance to take a huge chunk of the market with Sony flopping around, but instead they handed nintendo a chance to grab a lot of casual fans. Unlike the PS3 and Wii, who are leading gaming down a different road, the 360 is a graphically updated xbox hardly worth the $400 price tag.

Not necessarily true. They kept it in a tight enclosure. The system is constantly producing heat, with little room for ventilation. Sure, it'll reach equilibrium eventually, but unless that heat is well vented, the eq temp is going to be MUCH higher in that enclosure.

Try sealing your PC in a plastic box, and see what happens. :p

But yeah, sony is continually dropping the ball on this one.

i thought they wanted the ps3 to be some kind of all-in-one entertainment hub that's always in use or always on. heh.

I own a N64, Ps2 and Xbox. I just recently got the 360 and I love it. Worth every penny. The graphic updates isn't anything minor. Playing Fight Night 3 on 360 is TONS better then on XBOX.

How is PS3 leading gamers down a different road again? I totally understand the Wii is going down a different road, but the PS3 dropped one thing (dual shock) and added another thing (SixAxis), which in my opinion is more of a gimick than an actual "road" they are leading gamers down.
