No one mentioned the strong Yen has taken a huge chunk of thier profit right off the bat. (same goes for Nintento, who despite putting up amazing sales figures for like the 50th month in a row)

Sony and Nintendo both do a majority of thier business overseas. If thier home currency is strong, they would have to up all the prices on thier products sold in other currencies to keep profit the same.

Even considering what you've mentioned, Sony's total volume of sales is quite disappointing.
