Sony removes hardware backwards compatibility for PAL PS3

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," said David Reeves, president of SCEE.

Sony has said that 'a new combination of hardware and software emulation will enable the PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation titles, and a limited range of PS2 titles'.

Sony will publish a backwards compatibility list on the PS3's launch day, March 23, with additional titles becoming compatible through downloads via the PlayStation Network.

"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as in the US and Japanese models," a Sony spokesperson told Reuters.

Although Sony has yet to detail the new specification fully, analyst Datamonitor suggests that a new PS3 model will feature a "new chassis" designed to bring manufacturing costs of the console down.

Dumb dumb dumb.

I wonder how many "far fewer" games can be played.

I don't mean to Sony bash, but seriously, they've already completely pissed off the Europeans, Brits, and Aussies with the pricing schemes...how much more is this going to piss them off if more than a few major games aren't playable.

They are cutting costs, no big surprise, down the road it could lead to price cuts, software emulation will probably still work with many of the popular titles.

I don't get the decision myself. Sure it will save them ~$27 per console by taking the PS2 chip out but you're splintering the userbase and telling your PAL customers that they are getting less functionality for the same price (or more) than the PS3 customers in Japan and North America got.

Would have made more sense to get the software emulation working to close to the existing design as possible first and the release PS3s without the PS2 chip.

Slaps sony across the face and tells them to fvcking make a striped down versions that doesnt have blue ray, a regular old dvd player in it, no frills units, that costs around the $250-$300 range and make sure it plays all ps2 games, and a lot of people will flock to go buy it.

So basically what you're saying is they should throw a PS3 case on a PS2.

That would never work, the PS2 has rumble.

Didn't you hear? Vibration feedback is so last-generation.

By taking out Blu-ray, the PS3 won't be able to play BD games anymore, but it should be cheap eh?

Next week, Sony executives tell PS3 owners to hit themselves in the nuts with a hammer to please the god of PS3.

Who needs a pansy rumble controller when you can sit on top of your washing machine/tumble drier and go for the full-on super nashwan style?

OH PHULEEZ, like you need to stick a 8 gig game on a 40 gig disk, there are tons of games out there for the 360 that will play/be put out to play on the PS3 that are not on blu ray or HD disks for the 360, just regular old dl dvd disks. Maybe a few games like .5% for the next 5 years would take advantage of the blu-ray space but the other 99.5% would still fit nicely on a dl dvd and play on on a 360 with a dvd player so why the fvck not on a PS3 equipped with a dvd player?

And yes why the hell not give the consumers the option like the 360 at a later date to shell out for the blu-ray . Get my hands on the PS3 now at a cheaper price and when the format matures enough and there are a lot more games out there I want on the blu-ray format I will then shell out for the drive. Right now I dont see why I have to pay out the ass for a format and system that may fail and wont play my library of games I have for the PS2. Because I have a PS3 I am to throw away all my PS2 games and stop playing them???? Maybe it would be nice that the PS3 would play my multi hundred dollar library of PS2 games so I dont have my entertainment center filled with all kinds of fvcking consoles. Mayby just a PS3 and I can sell or box up the ps2 and controllers instead of having them clutter up the space?? You know how the Wii when I get it will play all my gamecube games and I can get rid of that console and not have it laying out because the one does the work of two and I can continue to enjoy the games I bought and not mess up my space ;)

Thats not asking to much I dont think considering how much I paid for these games to go, OH I just bought the PS3, guess I should throw away all these PS2 games now and system :p

As if the decision to get a Wii or 360 wasn't already clear. This just seals the deal.

Clearly they're emulating Microsoft who saw great success with the software BC in the 360.

<--360 fanboy who knows that the 360's BC sucks.

Now would have been the perfect time for Sega to introduce a new console. Everyone is disappointed with the latest models. :p

There are a ton of happy Wii and Xbox 360 owners...and a couple happy PS3 owners.

Yeah, it amazes me that one of the few things they did better than the 360 is being eliminated. Of course, I only cared about BC on the 360 until they started releasing enough new games where I didn't have to play old ones. The PS3 still has no library, and high PS2 sales show that people are definitely still interested in PS2 games.

When played on a PS3, PS1 and PS2 games look dramatically worse as the above video indicates. The big black box resizes the graphic output of 480i PS1/PS2 games at a lower resolution sans filtering causing screen artifacts and jagged edges. Like, jagged edges that somebody took a knife to. It appears the issue has nothing to do with the TV, cables, or your PS3 resolution setting, something only a firmware upgrade can fix."

Sony can't do that. They are forcing all software to be on blu-ray only, whether it needs the space or not. BTW, has there been a console game bigger size wise than a dual layer dvd yet?
