Hello. Nearly everything that goes wrong with Sony STR series is related to dry joints. Firstly, disconnect the spkrs and see if it still goes into protect when you turn the volume up. If so then you need to disconnect power and pull it apart and resolder any dry joints on the main amp pcb, especially all the ones on the 4 stk preamp chips. Check the output transistors for shorts but they are virtually always ok. If it is not even turning on then you need to disconnect power and remove the psu pcb (the one with the small transformer) and check it for dry joints. Another problem that I have seen for it not turning on is poor solder connections between the pcb that has the power tact switch and the main front panel pcb, always worth resoldering while you are in there.I have a sony str-d665 with a problem. I used it and it quit working, the display does not show and it has no sound, but yet the orange lights from TV/video and the surround sound modes work and it turns on. I think maybe its in protect mode but not sure. Help please!
