I know it has a much smaller screen, but since it plays games, movies, MP3's, etc. and since I can sell my DVD player to cover the cost of it... I'm thinking about keeping it versus selling it.

Anyone have one? Does it make your eyes bleed or would it be good enough for a car/plane trip?

EDIT: Mine came in, NO DEAD PIXELS!!! Spiderman 2 looks damn good on the screen. Decided to sell the portable DVD player to cover the costs.

Check out PSPVideo9.com. They're supposed to have a conversion tool so you can play movies and TV shows on your PSP.

Keep in mind that you'll have to buy a large (512mb-1gb) memory stick though.

I used PSPVideo9 to convert a downloaded HD tv rip to a mpeg4 to view on my PSP, however when I viewed the file on my PSP it was very fuzzy and not as clear as the spiderman UMD. I'm hoping that this is becuase I only have a 32MB mem stick and I had to lower all the settings. My question is to those with larger mem sticks and have converted video, does it look as good as Spiderman?

I'd definitely say it is because you had a 32MB stick. A 512MB is the minimum I would go with.

Yeah, agreed. I'm actually thinking a *gig*, personally. I'd rather do that and just copy my DVD's and tv series to the memory stick anyway, the last thing I want to do is start buying yet *another* goddamn movie format, and at that, one that can only be watched on a teeny-tiny screen. It's fun for travel, but if I'm paying $20 for that damn disk I better be able to pop it into a player and watch it on a large screen with 5.1 or higher surround sound, you know?

I didn't think I needed to (it was implied in my post).

1) What non-portable DVD player has a screen?

2) How many non-portable DVD players could be sold to cover the cost of a PSP?

No, it just plays UMD's. I personally would just buy a memory stick and encode videos for it. I'm certainly not going to buy a new & priopriety movie format (however good it might be).

If you sell your 'current' portable DVD player then it is a good mix up.

Get at least a 512mb and you can fit one movie at good quality taking ~ 300MB and have room for other clips, music, pics and game saves.

If you can get the 1GB that is great. 3 movies @ 300MB each and still room left for a few things :)

The quality of it is very very good imo. I just wish someone makes software where you can encode at 480x279 :D

How fast can you write a movie to a memory stick, anyway? It could get annoying to transfer multiple movies to multiple memory sticks when you're traveling.

Plus I hear the PSP doesn't have enough battery life for more than 1 movie. I don't know if that differs from most portable DVD players. I also don't know if using the memory stick extends the life considerably.

you can write it to the memory stick at usb 2 speeds. And no the psp has around 4 hours to five hours of battery life with a umd movie, but with a memory stick the battery life shoots up to 10 hours plus.

That's not bad at all! Does it have a swappable battery?

Is there anything like a CompactFlash -> Memory Stick adapter? Something where you could take a 4GB microdrive and connect it to the PSP? Be cheaper than a couple 2GB memory sticks.

the price of a 1 gig memory stick is alot higher than the cost for a DVDplayer on top of a PSP

If you have to sell your DVD player to afford the PSP, then you can't afford the costs of the movies to watch on the PSP... because the PSP doesn't play DVDs.

Sheesh - did you read the thread? I knows the PSP doesn't play DVD's. I asked how good movies look on the PSP - if they look good enough I'd consider selling my portable DVD player and just playing movies off of the memory stick.

I think the answer to that is obvious.
