The jist of it is that Dell has 20% off on the Sony Plasma with free shipping too in their TV section. I figure this is a pretty decent deal worth posting since it's a Sony. You can get other 42" Plasma's cheaper, but Sony always makes great TVs.

they used too. I think the newer one are made in Mek i co

But everything is either made in Mek i co or China.

I think 8 out of 10 dvd player are made in China

Still a nice deal for a SONY

Any VCR, ReplayTV, or TiVo can act as a tuner, so it shouldn't be too hard. Actually, the Samsung & Planar models right next to it are probably even better choices (for less money). The Planar one has 1000 cd/m2 brightness (very high), 1200:1 contrast (not super, but most likely a good bit more than the sony), and Faroudja DCDi processing, which means the scaling & deinterlacing will probably be better.

just FYI the resolution on the sony is just above regular progressive video. This is not an HD ready model being that its resolution is under 1280x720.

not a bad price, but not a crazy product.

FYI, there are no plasmas under 50" capable of HD resolutions.

You guys are pretty far off. First of all, 1280 x 720 is a true hd resolution as mandated by the atsc guidelines.
The top of the line hometheater dlp projectors currently use that resoultion, and they are meant to scale up to screens as large as 8ft+ wide.

The resolution is not the problem with this plasma, the best 42 in plasmas use this resolution or slightly lower.

It looks like the problem with this guy is the inputs. Its rgb or dvi only, no component. Which wouldnt be such a big deal if the dvi port wasnt hdcp compliant. This limits your source options tremndously.

But as a good hd panel 42 in plasma, this is a great deal.

If you have a rgb hidef source, you should be all set.
Transcoding sucks.

Yes there are.

Remember the best hidef is only 1080i or 1080p. so any monitor that does 1024x1024 or better is HD.

and others already offer 42" version or 40 or whatever sizes. I can't think of any plasma below 38/39 inches that offer this yet....

and with OLED 40" screens starting to appear in japan... competition should get more interesting soon

But at the price who cares? This is a great deal at the moment. I personally will wait and see what Christmas brings. JandR has what I think is the cheapest HDTV, a Phlilips 37 inch:

HD is defined as a minimum of 720p (which is 1280x720 in a progressive format) or 1080i (which is 1920x1080 interlaced).

There are 3 and only 3 resolutions for plasmas under 50":

1. 854x480, commonly called ED. Also sometimes 852x480.
2. 1024x768p, with non-square pixels. Enough vertical pixels for 720p, but insufficient horizontal to full resolve 720p, not to mention 1080i.
3. 1024x1024 "interlaced", commonly called ALiS, effectively giving you closer to a 1024x512 progressive (not exactly, but closest). Definitely insufficient horizontal for 720p or 1080i, and, depending on who you talk to, insufficient vertical for 720p and definitely for 1080i.

As you can see, none of the 3 have sufficient resolution to fully resolve 720p nor 1080i.

So why do some manufacturers with 1024x768 or 1024x1024 call their plasmas HD? They're lying. They simply ignore the horizontal pixel requirement, hoping consumers won't be educated enough to realize it.

Not true. Plenty have 1280x720 or 1024x768. You might be thinking of 1080 line native.

As explained above, 1024x768 is unsufficient to fully resolve 1280x720, since 1024 < 1280.

Please show me 1 1280x720 native plasma display under 50". Thank you.

That panny has component inputs, better contrast and has the option for hdcp compiant dvi.

btw, many argue that in the 42in category, ed resolutions are more than sufficient. Its a matter of viewing distance, if yer sitting very far away from an 42 in plasma, yer not gonna notice the xtra res on the hd panesl. If yer sitting closer, than you should get the hidef model.

Nice point Apex. I was just pointing it out. I personally wouldn't want anything under an HD resolution, but this resolution still kills a regular TV.

Yeah, it's actually not the consumers fault. There's just a lot of misinformation floating around about resolutions and standards, and the manufacturers are the ones perpetuating them.

Really, ED plasmas are pretty nice, if you get a good one. Like kki000 said, the Panasonic 42" one really rocks. There's actually an excellent deal going on the latest 50" Panny from Onecall right now too, with true HD native resolution (1366 x 768 progressive, with square pixels).
