SONY Nightshot or JVC Night Alive? **EDIT: I have chosen a cam**

I wondering which is better in DV video cameras!

I decided to get the JVC DVM75U, it has everything! Night Alive, Auto flash, 680K CCD, DV & AV & Svideo connectors. Small, light weight etc... All this for less than $700!!

BUT IS THERE MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 680K CCD & 1M CCD?

Seriously, i prefer Sony but price and size is a big factor for me.

isnt' the nightshot the one that lets you see through clothing? or rather the one that used to, before they fixed it?

Ummm. i dun mean about the xray capabilities! :)

I'm not sure what technology JVC uses for its Night Alive feature.

Any links or reviews from anyone?

It is hard to find any reviews, but JVC claims that their Night Alive is the only capable of shooting in low light places in FULL Color! While Sony's Nightshot is basically B&W with a green tint.

Um... is this true about JVC?

i've read that jvc night alive really only lets u shot objects that are still. if the object moves around, u will see "ghosting". sony night shot captures video at darkness better, but not if color. i think u should go jvc, and get a model with a mount for a light.

Wow, JVC is that bad... :( Sony is so expensive! :(

Double jeopardy for me! Gotta save money... but how?

Any links anyone can find or actually have the unit and personal review is the best for me now.

The sony definately has the better nightshot since it uses infared. Its 0 lux, complete darkness, up to about 15 feet away. All night alive does is slow down the shutter speed so more light can get in the lens causing the ghosting/slow motion effect. I vote for sony.

I'd get the JVC
have been very impressed with them lately..
and the Sony price premiums like mentioned before are not really worth it actually...

Yeah, with Sony you pay a lot for a name. Behind that name is good performance, but piss-poor reliability for stuff that costs so much. There is almost always a great alternative available for less from someone else. I'd go for the JVC.

No, that was an external extra lens, that was supposed to be used for low-light filming (it was a very good light-catching lens). It could see through clothing, but generally only relatively light clothes. I don't think they can/do sell them in the U.S., but I say a website awhile ago that had them. I think it was based in China, or some other Asian country (though the site was in English). They were quite expensive, and I believe that they only worked with the "professional" type cameras.

So Sony is expensive in cam and accessories. Good battery life.

JVC is cheaper. Not good battery life.

Ummm... i'll have to do more research and find the best JVC for my bucks.

Sony camcorders can record in low light in color too, they just don't market it as a special feature. You just boost the sensitivity of the CCDs, and slow the shutter down. It works with a surprisingly small amout of light. Yes, any movement will result in ghosting. It's like using a long shutter speed on a still camera. Nightshot is very impressive though. I have a DCR TRV8

Actually Sony did accidently sell a few consumer models with Nightshot that exhibited the "x-ray vision" in its Nightshot mode. This was not intentional but was a bug that cropped up in a few of them and since then fixed.

acutally it still works there are many websites on the subject. i can get mine to do it and it is a "post fix" camcorder.

DUDE!!! i was THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS close to buying that camera in december, but the guy was OOS. some guy on ebay... tried to haggle him to sell it to my off auction for $575 :p we agreed on $600 shipped, but he wasn't due for stock for two weeks. i picked up a DVM90U for $500 instead... becuz i'm impatient like that :D i figured i could live without the night alive ;)
