Bump!

This is a hot deal, the MZ-E70 retails for $299.99. This is 33% of the MSRP price

I think the only reason why people don't respond as much is because America doesn't use as much MD's . . .

Are there any recorders that record from PCs via USB cables? I'm not sure how they usually work. Can someone shed some light?

Wow, this is a good price. Here in Holland they cost $230,-
I'm really think of buying one, but what about recharging the battery? No problems with the 220 volt we have here?

Good find. :)

Not meaning to crap on your parade or anything, Sony prices are always inflated at their website, and anyone's a smuck to buy directly from Sony. ;)

And if any Ferengi wants to buy this and eGay it off, forget it, it runs around $100ish on eGay as well. :p

nice find. now only if i had $100 :)

and Chmichnga, yes, you can buy adapters that will hook up to USB and record to an MD (assuming you got a recordable MD).

Now, if you want a recording unit that hooks up to a PC, sony has em, but $300+.. i don't think so.

This portable minidisc player only plays minidiscs though. So if you don't already have a minidisc recorder, you can't make use of this player at all. (Not as good as the Sharp portable Minidisc player/recorder awhile back for $99) ... Hope everyone knew that :)

LiQiCE,

Thanks for pointing out the "play only" feature of this model. I almost bought one for my wife and woulda been real unhappy to find out that I had to buy another unit to record. I'm going with the Sharp MD-MS722...thanks for saving me some money!

Wolverine,

The Sharp 722 is a nice player/recorder, thats what I have right now. I got it for $99 actually awhile back but the place sold out pretty quick on them. I'm sure your wife will like the player though ... just gotta get used to all the controls :)

Just got a Sony MZ-R900 for $255. It's awesome because it has the new MDLP and records 2 1/2 hours on one minidisc without any noticeable loss in sound quality. Really small too unlike most of the Sony US MD players/recorders which have the AA battery hump. The reason I got it for so little was because I have friends who go to Hong Kong all the time and the prices there are something else!

If you're going to spring for a MD player/recorder, I suggest waiting for MDLP to become mainstream. If you factor in the cost for smartmedia or compactflash to hold 2 1/2 hours of high quality sound, you're looking at a price equivalent to a MD recorder. On top of that, a minidisc can be bought for as little as $1.50 these days. Doesn't make sense to buy a MP3 player unless you really need the shock protection and don't care about length of music playback.

Lastly, for recording MP3s to MD, avoid using analog cables. I personally have a Aureal Superquad soundcard with Optical/Digital output. Sure, they went out of business, but when the product is working fine, I couldn't care less.

For some perspective, I own a MP3 player also. Since I bought the MP3 player for $20, I use it for mountain biking or when I think there's the possibility that I might kill myself and the device I'm using. My MD recorder it too precious for that!

Yup, let the arguments rage back and forth, but I've seen and experienced both sides and I'll stick with my opinion.

The MZ-R70 bundle comes with a PC to MD link cable. When I bought the MZ-R70, it didn't come with the PC to MD link cable and it cost me $200. I think now the MDs are a lot cheaper than it used to be. Find some friends which goes back to Hong Kong or Japan and buy the MDs there. It's a lot cheaper in those countries because MDs players/recorders are usually made there.

The Sharp MDMS722 is a nice recorder/player, but it's also THICK. It's probably 75% thicker than players/recorders out nowadays.

This is an awesome deal. My Bro has this and it is small just a bit bigger than the E90 from Sony. Personally I only believe in the player only models. They are so much smaller and have over twice the play time on a single charge. I do all my recording at home on my MD deck.

This seems like a good deal, since I got the cheap and good Sharp player/recorder also. I can't seem to get into the Brandsforless site, do they still have FREE shipping at J & R?

I have the Aureal Superquad with Optical digital out also. I haven't used it to record my MP3's onto MD yet though. Are there any problems doing this?

Chmichnga check Minidisco.com for the USB adapter.

chrisbest01 are you kidding me? That's a very ignorant thing to say. MD players are usually much smaller than recorder/players. If it wasn't worth the money, why would companies have them for sale on the first place? I dare you to find a recorder/player that is as small as my Onkyo MD-P30. I know of a couple players that are about a mm smaller on one side, but that's about it.

Okay, so far today, I've received TWO pm's asking where I got the MZ-R900 for $255. If people would read the thread more carefully, I state that my friend gets things from Hong Kong.

Please don't PM me asking this again as the answer was right there to start with. In the US, the cheapest I've seen them for has been in the $300 range. You can get last year's MZ-R90 for $189 or so.

As for players being much smaller than recorders, I don't agree. If you look at the new Panasonic, it's pretty darn small. Your player is at most probably a few mm's smaller per a side if at all.

I personally don't see a reason to buy a player only device unless you have a recorder at home.

Here are the dimensions on the

Panasonic unit SJ-MR200 Recorder:
78.2 (W) x 71.6 (H) x 16.8 (D) mm

Here's dimensions on the Onkyo MD-P30 Player only:
79.5 (W) x 71.7 (H) x 14.2 (D) mm

I think most people would rather have something that records and it 2mm thicker... I know I would! This is especially true since most recorders and players are similar in price.

Also, the Onkyo is by no means the smallest player out there. There are MANY players that are smaller in size. Here are a few with dimensions:

Onkyo MD-P30 (yours):
79.5 (W) x 71.7 (H) x 14.2 (D) mm

Panasonic SJ-MJ88:
71.5 (W) x 78.5 (H) x 11.8 (D) mm

Sony MZ-E900:
77.7 (W) x 71.0 (H) x 12.7 (D) mm

Sony MZ-E90:
78.4 (W) x 71.5 (H) x 13.5 (D) mm

Sharp ST-77:
78.0 (W) x 71.0 (H) x 12.7 (D) mm

The list goes on and on and on...

Recorders tend to be a bit larger, but not by much:

Sony MZ-R900:
80 (W) x 75.5 (H) x 20.5 (D) mm

Sony MZ-R90:
78.9 (W) x 72 (H) x 17.3 (D) mm

Sharp MT-77:
71.9 (W) x 78.7 (H) x 16.8 (D) mm

Sharp MT-831:
79.4 (W) x 81.8 (H) x 17.9 (D) mm

The other thing to keep in mind is that YOU WANT MDLP! Without MDLP, you can only record 74 minutes of music onto a 74 minute disc. With MDLP mode 2, you can record 150 minutes onto a 74 minute disc. If you go to MDLP 4, you can record around 5 HOURS of music onto one disc. This is not the same as the mono mode of most players on the market. I never use MDLP 4, but MDLP 2 is way cool. I can put 2-3 CDs onto 1 minidisc now!
