MDR-EX71SL is $32.24 which is not a bad deal either.

Buy.com have both models for slightly less, but it looks like no free shipping is available.

Ya they are- I got a pair a few months ago and love them...does a good job of cutting outside noise.

Awesome headphones. Very good fit--I fall asleep wearing them!

Any idea where to get replacements for the ear thingies?

Nice pair of headphones although to me they feel cheaply made.

Best headphones I've ever had....so far. They are super comfortable. I got the 71's on eBay a long time ago....the are worth the extra $ b/c of the fit and sound....and my ears hurt no more!

51 and 71 are identical, minus the extension. I actually want and like the extension because when i board, the shorter cord is much easier to handle is my iPod is sitting on my left breast pocket of my jacket. Much more convenient than having all that cord hanging around.

excellent sound for the price. (note: i didn't say perfect)

Are these headphones a bad idea for someone that likes to be able to still hear what's going on around him?

Yes, like what other people said, it does a good job of blocking outside noise.
