i got this headphones for my Rio Cali and they rock.. perfect for the gym. They block out all the noise, and let's me focus on my workout and the music. Even blocks out teh grunts from the fools working out next to me 🙂

I have had both the MDR-EX51LPs (which I am currently using) and the MDR-EX71SLs (which the dog ate, that bastard lol) and Id say I like the 51's better. The 71's cord is way too short, it cant even reach down to my waist... although they do supply a extention cord but it makes it like 2 feet to big then. They both sound exactly the same in my book, but the 51's cord is the perfect size for me, without the need of a clunky extension cable.

As said before, these headphones are perfect for the gym, they block out the crappy music they play @ my gym and they sound amazing.

I bought these for my Dell DJ 15gb and I am more than happy about my purchase. I highly recommend these buds if you are looking for some, and dont like wearing those clunky headphones.

BTW, these are the most comfortable buds I have ever worn in my life 🙂, thanks to the 3 different sizes of pads they include.

I bought these in Dallas Fry's while out there on a biz trip a week or so ago. My notebook doesn't have enough volume to watch movies on a plane w/ regular headphones, was looking into noise reduction units and figured I'd give these a try as I'd heard good things about them. I think they were $39.xx [edit] Yep, they were, farkin eh--impulse purchase--oh well, was still worth it[/edit]

Anyway, for the first time I could actually hear/understand the movie on the plane AND I had a cold blocking my sinuses a bit too so was not even hearing that great to begin with.

Used them at home on my PC and they also are real nice.

Only complaint is the cord is very thin so it'll probably wear out /short out before get money's worth out of them. Not sure though, just a guess. Also, minor issue that the y-split is not symmetrical so wrapping up the cord is a bit awkward for traveling with them. And the case is sorta useless, package made it seem like it came w/ a way to spool up the cable but all you get is the plastic part to cover the earbuds. Ah well, they do sound good and well worth the money. I don't know if $39.xx noise reduction headphones would be better for the plane but these certainly did what I needed them to do.

On a side note, if you talk while wearing them, it sounds like you are hearing yourself through speakers, hard to explain, but, I guess it's just a side effect of the in-ear design.

[edit 2] BTW, they block out so much noise that I decided to get a different pair of over-ear headphones for my PC so I could wear them half-on/half-off when I want to play games w/o disturbing my sleeping daughter but still be able to hear if she wakes up. [/edit 2]

OK, so your vote goes for the 51s, and your dog's for the 71s, correct? 🙂

How are these earbuds for jogging or running? I have the Sennheiser MX500, but lost the paddings. A bit off topic, anybody know where I can get replacement earbud padding for cheap? There's no dollar store around here.

edit: Some of the reviews on amazon say it's not good for exercise since you hear bodily sounds more. Can someone verify this?

I lost my Sennheiser MX500 ear padding as well. I just couldn't keep them on no matter what I tried.

Radioshack.

they sell foam pads...i got 2 pair for around $2. they actually seem to stay on better than the ones my MX400's came with.

can anyone compare the sound quality between these Fontopias and MX400/500's?

As for bodily sounds, you're generally fine unless you bring them into the bathroom....

Anyhow, I have the ex71's and have not had that problem at all - especially since the music you're listening to tends to drown out any other sounds. One thing I did notice is sometimes you can hear the cord brushing up on your shirt. This isnt really anything that would bother you or hear unless you really listen for it.

Just keep in mind with the noise cancellation that you generally cannot hear ANYTHING which could be good or bad.

Grr where were you when I bought the 71s from eBay for like $40.

Either way these earbuds get my thumbs up of approval. Bought the 51s when they were only available in Asia and fell in love. Upgraded ot 71s. Bought another pair of 71s for work 🙂

The noise cancellation is both good and bad. Helps me block out the noise but also blocks out what everyone else is saying. Yeah I hate the sound of the cable brushing up on your clothes but I guess you only hear that when you're trying to hear it.

by the way, the price of the ex71's on amazon has bounced around from $29 to $35...Sure it's not much of a price difference but then again it's not much of a price difference from the ex51's to the ex71's.

The only difference between the 51's and the 71's are the different length cord and a cheap silver plasic case that I never use. The only way I would recommend the 71s over the 51s is if you use a mp3 player that is attached to your arm with an armband, cause that is about the only thing the original cord can reach without the extension cord 🙁

They won't wear out. I've pulled and stressed mine so much over the past two years, I'm completely surprised they haven't torn on me. I did lose my bud pads though.

They're not that easy to lose, but if they get caught on something and you don't notice, it's easy for them to get ripped off. I may jump on this deal. It's an outstanding price.

I want to confrim that the 71 does come with a case that you can put the wires in it? Similar to the case that come with other headphone. I have the 51 and keep losing the ear plug and the stupid plastic case come with the 51.

RadioShack sells the foam pads for $3. 😛 Thanks for letting me know though.

I realized that my brother has the 51LP. I also have the MX500s. 🙂

My own test of the two earbuds...
The 51LP has the silicon buds, which might take some getting used to. I just tried them recently (first time) and it's odd to have inside my ear. Since it's a good seal, it forces air into my ear canal. Not something I really like... The tremble and bass seem a bit exaggerated. The cord is quite long. LOnger than the MX500 by a foot? It is also slim and flexible. The MX500 cord is almost 2x as thick (imagine 2 sony wires stuck together, though a bit slimmer).

The MX500, I think it's gotten old. It doesn't seem as crisp as when I first had them. I picked it over my previous Sony frontopia a few years ago, after comparing them. The bass and tremble isn't as strong as the 51LP. The cord is a bit thicker, short and stiffer. However, it does have volume control, which is nice.

Well, that's my initial impression. I'm used to my Yamaha speakers and my Sony V6 headphones. Unfortunately I don't have the V6 around to compare with these two earbuds. The 51LP isn't too bad, if I didn't have to depressurize my ears sometimes. I'm also not sure how I'd like the extra tremble and bass, it might give me headache after a while if it's too strong.

edit: Maybe it's time to look for foam pads for my MX500s... 🙂

thanks for the response.

i was listening to my MX500's and realized how much ambient noise came through (i was at a coffee shop and it was slightly louder than normal). these headphones are attractive because of how they block out ambient noise...

anyways, give your local Radioshack a call. it was $3 online for 1 pair, but when i went into the store it was $1.99 for two pair. worth a quick phone call 🙂

Yea, the 71s come with an additional silver plastic cast that fits the buds and the cords, but not that well, I dont like it very much, but it might work for you
