Sony laptop won't recognize cdrw/dvdrom.

I'm working on my Sony PCG-VX88 laptop. When I plug in the external drive, the drive powers up but is not recognized (although it does power up). The drive is a PCGA-CRWD1.
I have Windows XP Home SP2 installed.
The external drive hooks up with an "ielink" cable that incorporates the power supply and firewire into one cable. I don't know where to look for firewire support in my device manager. I walked through everything that was there and it all says it's good to go.
Any help will be hugely appreciated 🙂

firewire is usually seen as network adaptor. Check under there for device manager. When you pop in a CD, does it recognizes it?

You might want to refer to your Sony doucmentation on this also. Maybe there is special properity software, Sony is famous for properity stuff.

I've actually moved on to my "Sony sucks" stage. I used to love their stuff, bit when my kids broke my ielink cable and I found they wanted 75 bucks for a new one, I swore them off forever. Fortunately my wife has the same laptop and I'm able to use her drive and cable.
Anyways...
I uninstalled the 1394 adapter and 1394 bus controller. Windows picked it up and reinstalled them on reboot.
Still no wee-oo.
The drive will spin up when I drop in a cd, but nothing else happens.
