Sony Laptop screen Problem

Hello all,

I have a issue with my laptop and I need your help to figure it out. The issue is the screen is very dim no matter if I boot the computer up into the bios or when it loads into Windows XP. I have tried different video drivers and I looked in the power settings for the option were it dims the screen while on battery power. I opened the laptop and looked at the cable connected to the motherboard and there seems to be nothing wrong. The only way I can use the laptop right now is to use a external monitor and the vga port on the back. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Has it got brightness control on the keyboard?
Generally you hold down the second function button, and press the corrosponding buttons. The second functions of keys are usually in a different colour.

If that doesnt work, and by dijm you mean really dark, the blacklight could be going/gone.

Had one customer with the same problem on a different laptop. In her case it was a crumb of food that lodged into the switch that when the screen is lifted it turns on the backlight. Probably not that but check just to be sure. Your invertor that changes the power to light the backlight might be gone as well since you still are seeing a picture eventhough it is dark.

Thanks for the replies and yse I do believe the back light has gone out. Is there any way to fix it yourself or is this not possible. Unfortunately the laptop is no longer under warranty.

Have you got the facility to connect your laptop to an external monitor?
If you have and you have no problem with viewing your operating system on the external monitor then you can safely assume that either your inverter or backlight has failed.
