Same at costco here on the east coast NJ. That TV is awesome, my brother in law paid $2500 last summer. Only negative thing about the TV is that it is not 16:9...

This is a GREAT TV. For those in SoCal, I bought this TV from $1950 from Reference Audio in Gardena. You might want to try them.

Question: Who will honor the warranty? I don't think Costco is an authorized Sony dealer. If so, Sony won't honor the warranty. If Costco will honor it...hmmm This is something I always forget to ask when I go to Costco cuz I just go in grap the needed stuffs and then leave.

Here is a great place to discuss about Sony A/V stuffs. It's like the Anandtech of Sony: http://www.agoraquest.com/

Well I just heard recently that the current HDTV standard is going to be outdated in 6months.... so now I'm on the holding pattern for a new TV. BTW, I saw this advertised in a local NJ store for $1799. This ran for 3 weeks and then now it's $1799 for the 36XBR400 (the old model). The store is American Dream, sorry no website as they sell Furniture and more.

what are you talking about? the only thing that will change in the next six months is that new sets will have dvi inputs. but the hdtv standard isn't changing at all.

I knew I read it from somewhere in there. Here's the link to the article.

Here's a quick quote on it...
Unfortunately for consumers, the new encryption schemes mean that if you have purchased a display device before the fall of 2002, there is a 90% chance that you will not be able to watch digital HDTV media on your display.

Now this was just posted by someone else, I haven't really read the WHOLE article... so take it with a grain of salt.

>>>Now if only Costco could get the 40" XBR700. Now that is a killer TV! <<<

Costco in Antioch, CA was selling them for $2,999. They have only the display model
left for $2899.

yeah, i read that article last week. basically what it comes down to is that hollywood and premium content providers (HBO, pay per view, etc.) may decide to only allow the HD signal to pass through a DVI input so that they can prevent the unlawful recording of their pristine digital movies or other programming. with the DVI connection they can decide what content can be recorded and what can't. what this means is if your set does not have a DVI input then basically once they flip the switch the component video signal will max out at 480p (instead of 720p or 1080i) and you won't be watching in high definition anymore. so while the high definition format isn't changing, the encryption and methods in which you receive it will. others have argued that the implementation of DVI isn't such a huge deal, as they feel it will be years before they start downrezzing non DVI connections and furthermore that it will only apply to pay per view content and not network broadcasts. mark cuban for example has said he is opposed to copy protection in all forms and won't use it on his HDNET. the way i see it is if you already own an HD set don't sweat it too much. you will be able to use it in all it's glory for at least a couple more years and it's possible that some kind of adaptor will be produced that will make it compliant with DVI. if you havn't yet bought a HD set i would suggest you wait until this fall when there will be a lot of new models equipped with it. that's what i'm doing.

Sony will. I called Sony because I want some adjustment done to the set. They gave me a number of a local repair shop who sent a technician out to the house to look at the set and fix it for free. They didn't care where I bought the set from.

heh aaaah crazy eddie...fond memories of the 80's when I was a kid...

:) My parents' microwave was purchased there when he had the blowout sale(aka the we're out of business one)...it was damn cheap and a nice Sharp Carosel II(this was before sharp made so many damn Carosel models they dropped the numbering at the end lol).

P.S. The microwave tried to kill me like a night before I left for college...I opened the door and it just started nuking me alive for some reason...closed the door, it turned off, opened it, and it attempted to murder me again. LOL...

Thanks to everyone for pointing out the stores that have the xbr700 in stock in Cali... unfortunately, Salt Lake stores still don't have them. $2900 - $3000 is a ton to pay for a TV, but this is without a doubt the best tube TV made today. It will last you 15 to 20 years easily.

How long is the warranty, Costco will usually accept returns if you are unsatisified.

Grrr, Crazy Eddie's. I hate that place, he was very insulting when I was going to drop alot for a brand new big screen, never went there again.
