I have a sony hi8 video camera and I want to edit some of the videos I have on my computer. This camera doesn't have firewire so how would I do this?? Is there an adapter I can purchase?? Any help would be great!!

I also have a Sony Hi8 and I bought a TV capture card to grab images direct from my camera. It works great. I think the Leadtek TV Capture card might work for you. I have an ASUS TV Card...I dont think it is made anymore. I hook it up via an S-Video cable.

My Sony Hi8 camera actually has a USB port built in. If yours doesn't you can look at the line of Dazzle products. They make converters that plug into your USB port. It will take RCA or s-video in and convert it to USB. They have a bunch of products starting down in the $30 range I believe and going up to at least $200. So there should be something there you can use.

The Dazzle converter thing (usually the video creator 80) gets poor reviews. I recommend getting any cheap internal PCI tv card with Svideo.

You also need a $4 RCA to 3.5mm adapter from Radio Shack to plug the sound from the camcorder into the sound card. When you capture, I recommend using the free program VirtualDub to get to AVI. You can then go from there.

It'll take a while experimenting and finding out what to do. I recommend sites like dvdrhelp and doom9.net for tutorials to get you started.

Thanks for all the help!! The exact model of my camera is- ccd-trv67. I looked on the sony web site but couldn't find anything on this camera. I see it has a dc-in input.. What could I use that for??

DC-In is for power only, maybe an external battery pack.

I wanted to transfer 3 hours worth of old vacation video to DVD recently from a Sony 8mm video camera. After some research I picked up Pinnacle's Movie Studio 8 with their DC10+ video capture card. Capturing went as well as expected, I only lost an average of 1 frame per minute of video (again, from an analog source, I'd say that's pretty good). Editing, rendering, compiling and burning the video to DVD eventually worked out quite well with Studio 8 and now I don't have to worry about loosing any precious memories to deteriorating video tape again.

FWIW, I just bought a new Sony mini DV camera and shot some video over the holidays. Connecting the camera via firewire to my computer, firing up Studio 8 and importing the video was incredibly smooth. I love the fact that you can control the video camera's transport controls right through the software. Also, dropped frames are a thing of the past thanks to firewire. I think I just found myself a new hobby! 😀
