anyone have any first hand use of a sony g520 monitor?

i've used both samsungs before, but never a sony monitor.

so anyone have any thoughts about it?

I have used the sony g520 and the samsung 900nf. Of the two I must say I prefer the Sony. Of course it really comes down to personal preference...

Well if you want a 22 inch one then the Samsung 1200NF. Lots of people have complained about the 900NF but they also haven't set it up properly. I have a 900NF right in front of me now and believe me if someone critisizes this monitor then there is seriously wrong with their eyes or they are simply being biased.

I am not critizing it. I thik the samsung 900nf is a very nice monitor. That being said I simply believe that to my eyes the Sony g520 is slightly nicer...

I have a NEC Multisync FP1350X which is a 22 inch monitor taht uses the mitsubishi diamondtron tube, and I LOVE it. its a little cheaper than the Sony.

Isn't the G520 a 22 inch Sony monitor though? Yeah you see it will have a larger bandwidth than the 900NF thus higher refresh rates at say 1600x1200.

I'm personally going to get myself the 1200NF ASAP and keep the 900NF as a second monitor for the 2nd PC. Just don't buy cheap monitors, Samsung, Sony, Mitsubish, Liyama are all
excellent makes. Even the Samsung monitor I bought in 1996, I still that offers impressive performance for what is now 5 years old technology.

I have no experience with any of these monitors, all I know is that Sony makes some of the highest quality monitors you can get. I believe the G520 would be your safest bet.

Can you elaborate on that GFORCE100? I think my image is pretty good so far.
As for the G520 I have seen my friend's and I think it is just a bit better than the Samsung but the difference is not that great.

It is just that some people bought the Samsung 900NF unpacked it and were unhappy with it yet failed to use the OSD to manipulate the display. It isn't always that a monitor is setup optimally when unpacking. For these reason some bad opinions have been floating about concerning the 900NF.

When it comes to aperture grille monitors, even when comparing monitors that are both based on Trinitron CRTs, Sony always comes out on top by a ways due to two things: more vibrant colors (likely due to their specs on coating), and tighter focus, esp. in the corners (although no AG monitor has perfectly clear corner focus). The same can be said when comparing a Trinitron vs. a Diamondtron CRT, which is the CRT type in Samsung, as well as Iiyama and a few others (like NEC/Mitsubishi).

My personal opinion from use/ownership is :

Sony
Iiyama
Samsung

All three are top rate, and depending on your vision, and the software you are using to compare/calibrate, you may find little to no difference amongst them.

I've seen a Sony too and I wouldn't praise it except of course unless we're talking the 24 inch model. I can't say whether it was setup correctly but the 900NF has better colors standing next to it.
Lets also remember all these monitors allow adjustment of the display tempreture though enriching colors if we please.

I would suggest going to a store that carries these monitors, deciding which one you look the best and then ordering it online. I have two Iiyama monitors and a Sony, I like all of them. The computer lab at the university where I'm a student and where I work has a number of Samsung 955DF monitors, they're also very nice. They're all good brands, it all comes down to personal preference and how much you're willing to spend... the Sony (and Iiyama) monitors will usually be more expensive than the Samsungs.

<< I have the G500 and I love this thing. It is the BEST upgrade purchase I've made (and I upgrade A LOT). 😉 >>

Ditto, ditto, ditto and ditto.. 🙂

I had a 900NF for about 1 day. It had to go back. The left side of the screen was very fuzzy and couldn't be adjusted without making the rest of the screen fuzzy. It also had several dead pixels. I swapped it out for a Sony E500 21" Trinitron Flatscreen. I can never ever use any other monitor again!🙂

I've got a samsung 955df and I'm pretty happy with it
refresh rate isn't great at high res but the clearity and colour on it is great. I find that the main reason sony monitors look so good is their darker frame, makes the colours brighter and more vibrant but side by side the diff is minor.
I personally prefer shadow mask, don't like fuzziness and those gray lines drive me crazy. They just spank of a defective design no one ever bothered solving.
my eyes are 15/20 so those things bug me, it's all personal preference really.

I've tried the G520 and the 1200NF. Both had significant blurry areas for small text at 1280x1024. Your experience might be different.

I got sick of CRTs- especially 21"- it's a real pain to find one that doesn't have flaws. Instead, I got a 18.1" LCD with a DVI video card. I'll never go back to a CRT again.

hey mfavin

what lcd did u get?

i would like to get one
but i'm worreid about ghosthing when i watch dvds and play quake 3...

Planar 18.1" - ghosting is no problem at all. I've been playing RTC Wolfenstein tons, plus some others. Search "Planar" in this forum, I made some posts a few days ago.
