Hmm... I need a new CRT monitor and am wondering if you guys have any advice/ reocmmendations.
I'm looking at these two right now as my top contenders for my hard earned cash. They both have .22 mm dot pitch, both 20" viewable areas... Both vary greatly in price! viewsonic for $550 and sony for $1500. The funny thing is, although the sony has max res of 2048 x 1536 (a setting i'll never go as high as) its refresh rate seems to be rather low... at least thats what they put under "recommended refresh rate" as 85 Hz... while Viewsonic's goes up to 149 Hz for same res. But theres also something called "Vertical Scan Range" which varies from 48 Hz - 170 Hz... is this the refresh rate range? all in all- is this Sony worth the extra grand?

I just got a F520 a few days ago and I love it. I'm running 1600x1200 @ 100Hz. I'm not sure why the recommend that same resolution @ 85Hz. I tested out the highest recommended resolution for you, 1920x1440 and I think that 85Hz is the max. I'm using a new Radeon 8500.

I have never tried the Viewsonic.

ONE BIG THING.

When I was shopping for prices for the Sony, I settled on getting it from Gateway for $1599 plus free shipping. This was about the best I found from a store with a name I recognized the day I was looking. (I used pricewatch, etc). Unfortunately the day the Monitor arrives, I discovered the Monitor at Dell for something like $1569 PLUS they has 20% off all accessories that day (including the monitor). If I would have waited a few days, I could have saved myself $350 :(

wow 1600 x 1200 @ 100 Hz? Thats beautiful! Viewsonic can only goto 77 Hz at that res according to specs. Hey i bet your eyes never get red or start itching staring at that baby eh? I have an LCD right now and I must say, although the picture is very sharp, the monitor is so lightweight and convenient, I a disappointed in it's effects on my eyes. Staring at my LCD really makes my eyes RED almost bloodshot after a few hours. Yet I can stare at the CRT at work for 8 hous a day without a hint of redness. This was really a big concern for me...

I was reading posts on this Forum and someone said one day Dell was having a 20% off sale. They had the same sale a few days later. Both were for 1 day only. I guess they have 20% off every so often.

I have sony F400 (19" version of F520) and it is a VERY NICE monitor and I haven't seen any better looking 19" monitor yet. Very well worth it, especially if you'll be looking at the monitor each day and are planning to keep it for a while.

I personally never had any luck with Viewsonics. While they save you money in the short run, in the long run you spend about the same. I had one 17" (PS775) and one 21" (PF790) fail on my after about 6 months. Shipping them back for RMA is along almost $80 and the hassle of getting them packaged, and ready to ship is not the fun part either. I spend a bit extra on F400 and it had been running flawlessly for 2+ years now, reliability is very important to me, and Sony offered that to me 100%. I'm very satisfied with my F400.

Viewsonic has a nice logo but that's it--you're going to get your hands on one bad-ass monitor in that F520 ;) From what I read, it's the best 21 incher out there.

How does the Sony G520 compare to the likes of VS G810 and others in the $700 price range? The G520's spec sheet looks pretty
impressive: horiz sync up to 130kHz. 0.24mm flat trinitron, dual inputs...

No G520s in town that I'm aware of so I can't look at one firsthand. Anybody know how its image quality compares to the IBM P260?

There is much more involved in the monitor besides specification. If let's say Viewsonic and Sony had identical specs, I would choose Sony any day over VS simply because Sony's picture quality is as close to flawless as it gets.
