The PS3 is seriously at least a year behind of where it should be - in games, features, and price. I really wanted this conference to "wow me" and it just fell flat.

I think it's an excellent value at the current price if you want everything it has to offer... it just isn't a 2 year old video game system price. Blu-ray is what makes it worth the price.

I agree - it's a great "value" for a Blu-ray player.

Thing is, Blu-ray is still in its infancy, and so you're paying an unnecessary early-adoption fee to get what should ultimately be a gaming machine.

I've always been fond of it as a media center - Sony is and always has been great with that stuff (ignore Betamax and UMDs) - but they dropped the ball as a powerful gaming successor to the PS2.

Yeah, but if you look at it as paying $300 for the video game system and $100 for the Blu-Ray functionality, both are great deals. 😉

Wait, they're not getting rid of the 80 GB version that has a game + PS2 BC, right? My first assumption was that they would have two concurrent 80 GB models, but after re-reading what you wrote I can't tell if they're keeping the current 80 GB model. If they're keeping the current 80 GB, they ought to at least bump it up to 100 GB to avoid SOME confusion.

I don't know what the exact plan is with the current 80GB. I imagine they'll sell the MGS4 bundle, let it clear out and introduce the new 80GB.

Sadly, this sounds like Sony. No more PS2 BC, when there are scores of good PS2 games that will never be re-made for the PS3.

If the low-end PS3 supported PS2 BC they could also be selling ISOs like MS is starting to do for xbox1, at almost zero cost. They pocket the free money while keeping classic games available. But noooo. :|

If only there were > 120 million PS2s in existence, many of which available used, and millions more being made each year. IF ONLY! 😛

It's true the ability to play PS2 games isn't going anywhere for years, but it would be nice if years included the lifetimes of the PS3 and PS4 too.

And when a PS3 is your PS2 system, it would support:
- play ISOs from the HD (if Sony was selling ISOs) without loading discs
- get ISOs cheap for out-of-print "collectible" games (if Sony was selling ISOs)
- unlimited virtual memory cards for juggling many saves over many games
- upscaling (though in my tests component from a real PS2 was about as good)
- a single console with one set of cables and one set of controllers.

Imagine that. Playing PS2 games on a PS2. BRILLIANT!

Granted, there are benefits to playing PS2 games on the PS3. Frankly, I'm pretty surprised that they haven't developed an all-software solution so they could sell downloadable PS2 games like MS is doing with Xbox games.

So why would Sony claim that 2008 is the year of the PS3 when they came in 2nd to copies sold of GTA4, all of their major games at their E3 press conference didn't even show gameplay footage with TBA release dates (i.e. NOT 2008), and their hugely delayed Home will only be in public beta form this holiday?

I wonder how much farther Sony would be behind is Microsoft didn't fuck up with their shitty hardware?

So if I don't buy a PS3 in the next few months while the current 80GB with BC is still on the market, I may never have another chance to get a new PS3 with BC?

F*** them.

Say what you will about having a PS2 and PS3 hooked up simultaneously, if I have to choose between buying a PS3 now or buying a PS3 never, I'll choose never. I'll tell the wife that we can watch our Blu-Ray wedding movies in HD when the standalone players come down to real-world prices.

I tend to agree with blurred ... I'm new to the ps3, picked it up with the mgs4 bundle. Although the game is good, seems like I'm always struggling to find another game to play but can't find a good one 🙁

The bundle is quite loud compared to the other ones, apparently. I wasn't too impressed with the loudness of mine, and other people confirmed that the 80gb MGS4 ones are louder than the 40gb.

I am interest in Mag :! it will end up a total fuck cluster like joint Operation. 256 player working as a team i like to see that , reason why bf never went over 64player. Mag was the only big surprise from Sony presconfrence to me. I knew God of war 3 was coming and also DC Universe.

Me too. The fact that they're just upping the current 40GB to 80 and thus losing BC may actually push me to get an 80GB soon so I get the BC.

As much as I think Sony are a bunch of douchebags for first touting PS2 BC when the console launched, then nerfing it, then removing it altogether, I really think that BC is an overrated feature and would not stop me from picking up a PS3 if there was anything at all coming that I was super excited about.

My God of War feelings have subsided. I was riding so high on God of War 1 that I would have purchased a PS3 if GoW2 came out for the PS3 at launch, now... I don't really care anymore. I don't see the draw of a 256-player war game... and the one title that has me keeping an eye on it, relies completely on community created content... which in the console world I feel is a destination for failure and penis levels. There are a *few* exclusives I wouldn't mind playing, but nothing that I'm going to buy a system for.

I keep planning on buying a pS3 and then changing my mind. I was hoping for something awesome at the conference.

I will say that Killzone 2 looked better than expected but it is only another shooter that I can do without.

I will probably wait now to see how God of War 3 turns out cuz I love that series.

Capcom vs. Tatsunoko will probably come out for the PS3 in Japan but probably will never come to the US because of licensing issues. If that happens, I'll be buying a PS3 solely for a 2d fighting game. sad.

I like (and my wife loves) the SSX series of games and would want to be able to play them (among other PS2 titles we have) on a PS3.

I own a PS3 now and can easily admit this is not the year of the PS3. By the time they get their shit together on this console it will be time for the next round. We are talking 18 months from now and the next round will be the buzz. I dont see Sony closing the gap with Nintendo or the 360 in 18 months. Just wont happen. They are getting better numbers out of the big named releases(but still losing badly to the 360). But overall the top 10 for monthly software sales is littered with competitors products. If I added up the top 10 software sales since January it would look fugly for Sony.

That is exactly my mindset as well.

And now that I've discovered the world of streaming HD content from my PC, Blu-ray has almost no appeal at all. The biggest perk would be that I could do 5.1 audio on the PS3 and it would be less noisy (though my 360 isn't too loud).

Backwards compatibility would be nice, I guess, but I don't think it's a deal-killer for buying the console - I honestly can't see myself playing too many PS2 games - mainly because I feel a bit disconnected. Like, on the 360, if you play an original Xbox game, you can't access your friends list, can't see what they're playing, other people can't see me and send me an invite or message, etc. I've come to require these things. I need to be connected. There's no reason not to be. So I find I need to force myself to go back and play old Xbox games - and really Fable is the only one I managed to get through just so I wouldn't miss anything in Fable 2. Funny thing is, until recently, that's how the PS3 was - even for PS3 games. It's unacceptable. They still don't have cross-game invites and standard voice chat.

These things are gaming consoles, not investments. I'm not going to pay a premium now for a powerful console so I can play a handful of great exclusives a year(?) from now. And especially not if, when these games finally do come out, the in-game features I've come to know and expect are not a certainty. Sony has been claiming in-game XMB since E3 07, and then they released it.... a month ago.

Whatever. I seriously wonder how big of a difference Microsoft's shitty hardware has made on this generation - as it is the strongest go-to argument PS3 fanatics have. But seriously, if the strongest argument for your gaming console is that it isn't made with papier-mache like its competitor and that it plays movies in a media format that "won" barely 6 months ago, you need to re-evaluate your business decisions.

See, the online stuff doesn't factor into my decision at all (except for updates). I don't remember the last time my 360 was connected to the network. I'm too lazy to setup a bridge downstairs (my primary router & all PCs are upstairs) and I'm not dropping ~$100 for M$'s network adapter. I also don't stream from my PC b/c it's upstairs and the TV and whatnot are all downstairs. The built-in wireless on the PS3 is nice for updates but really that's all the use it would have for me.

Having a PC hooked up to my TV is far better than anything the PS3 and 360 can do. My friend also has a geexbox pc setup on his TV (although mine's a Vista Ultimate machine). I can play any type of file I want and pretty much do anything else. I even setup StepMania and Frets on Fire so I can play those games (using my 360 controllers) with about 50x more songs (I have about 2000 songs in StepMania).

I prefer having it for that off-chance that I'd want to use it, but I haven't used it yet. I also don't play many console games though, so that'd probably be why as I do own PS2 games and my PS2 is packed away.

I'm not really excited for anything coming out for the PS3 at this point. I'd be more excited if they made the console more user-friendly.

This is true, but we're talking about gaming consoles. Technically, they're not much more than heavily restricted, "gimped" PCs. 😉

I'm just saying the PS3's biggest selling points are Blu-ray playback, strong hardware, and future games.

This E3, I was hoping future games became present games. Instead, the exact opposite happened - they lost a future exclusive (FFXIII), delayed a very intriguing game (Little Big Planet), and gave no hard dates for anything else.

I don't care if God of War 3 or MAG are the greatest, most insane games ever - if they're coming out October of 2009, that's when I'll be interested in the PS3.

they didn't lose FF13, you can still get FF13 for PS3.

the way people on forums are talking about FF13 you would think that people who own a PS3 now have to go buy an Xbox360 to play it.

Losing exclusivity on a system-seller is potentially a big deal. People who have a 360 who might have bought a PS3 for FF XIII now don't have to. On the other hand, I think Final Fantasy players are more likely to be Sony fanboys than with other games (like GTA IV), so doubt we can expect the Xbox 360 version to sell more copies than the PS3 version like GTA IV did.

i realize all that, i'm just saying that people who are discussing this issue make it out as though FF13 on PS3 is no longer an option.

and i really don't think FF13 is nearly as much as "system seller" here in the US as it is in Japan, and in Japan, Xbox360 will not get FF13.

and while i know this isn't scientific facts, most people i know who own a 360 and want FF13 and were getting a PS3 for FF13, already have the PS3 for FF13. and most people i know who have neither console and were waiting for FF13 to come out to PS3 before they got PS3, can still do that. but like i said, that's just from my personal experience, far from scientific fact 😛

I don't think anyone is trying to say they lost the game, it's just bad wording. "Lost a future exclusive" == "Lost exclusivity to a future game." The latter is much more clear, but the former makes sense if you know what he's talking about, which we all do.

I'm one of those people who got the PS3 partially in anticipation of FF XIII. D'oh. At least the Blu-ray player still makes it worthwhile to have. I'm not sure which system I'll buy FF XIII for... I'm wondering how many discs it'll be on for the 360.
