Sony DVD burner $24.99 AR

Good find, but people here would probably rather sell their soul for a SATA based burner than pay a good price for a PATA.

Not worth paying a premium for SATA over PATA on an optical drive. If you know otherwise, please enlighten us.

I think it's because a lot of the new motherboards don't have PATA connectors anymore, and are SATA only.

I got this burner around BF from CompUSA. It's a rebadged Lite-On SHM-165P6S. Nothing really special. Works fine, and the rebate came in a fairly quick time.

Like SleepyB said.. New mobo/chipset only has one or none PATA this day. They might have one or two more with 3rd party IDE controller on board - but sometimes it delays the boot, sometimes it doesn't work with some IDE ODD, etc. And it also helps to organize the case with less messy wires.

And also, premium is only few bucks this day, so it's definately worth.

My biggest concern is airflow with pata

Lots of new systems are short on pata. Sometimes very short ( zero). I figure drive mfgs are paying a royalty to MB mfgs to keep it out of the chipsets. Intel makes a few bucks leaving pata out and LG, Liteon seagate et al make a ton reselling us all our drives.
