Seems like a pretty good deal to me. I've been looking for a new camera since I just sold my now out dated Nikon 995. The Sony's are suppose to have a really fast startup time and almost no shutter lag - something that I really hate with other cameras.

Anyway, I think $299 for this camera is a steal. I'm trying to decide between this and the new V3.

This is a great price for a 5mp camera with lots of features. Only several months ago, it sold for $499. It takes great night shots, is well-made, has a fast autofocus and quick response time. Battery life is only so-so, so you might want to invest in a second battery. You can read the reviews at Steve's digicam, dpreview, megapixel.net, etc.

Sweet price! Unfortunately, I searched the couch and came up a tad short of the $299....:(

Picked one up. At this price it's hard to pass if you're in the market for a digital camera, which we were.

Even got a free teddy bear for the daughter. (I know, weird promo...)

I loved this camera for the built and the Zeiss lens. For $300 it's a steal, but I have to warn you about the battery. The V1 along with most of more expensive Cybershot P(x) models use the Sony NP-FC11 Li-ION Battery. The battery is puny and does not hold much charge. My friends and I have three cybershots total, a P5, and P9 and a P10. The C battery are crap after 100+ charge cycles and I even practice fully discharging them before charging almost at all times. They would all die now after 30+ shots, after ONE dinner party usually. I'd expect the V1 would conserve more power, but I may still opt out to get the Canon S410 (about $300 street now) or the S500 (about $360 out the door on amazon) now. Much better color processing and use CF cards instead of MemoryStick.

PS Just stopped by Costco and found out the SanDisk Ultra II CF cards 512MB (about 66x) are now at $58.

Time to get a canon then. S500 for 360 on amazon, even cheaper elsewhere. S60 similarily priced.

The Sony W1 is only $350 at most stores, has 5.0mp, Carl Zeiss lens, 2.5" LCD (which is HUGE when you see it in person!), a metal body, and the best feature uses two AA batteries. I don't think it has the nightshot feature of the V1.

How is AA batteries a good thing?
I dunno - I just don't like 'em - though they are more cost effective - I dunno if they retain same amount of battery life...

hmm... maybe they are better

But they don't look as cool. =D

The W1 and the V1 aren't even close. The V1 is way better.

Definately get the Canon, preferably S500 which has the same image sensor as G6 which is quite awsome for color processing.

Although it does not use AAs, you can pick an extra battery from e-bay for less than $10, usually from a Hong Hong sellers (with good feedbacks).

Sony is lagging behind unfortunately.
Yet, many people go after Sony's brand name.

Sensor quality must be the first consideration when purchasing a digital camera not the pixel or zoom.
I printed a 4MP image in original size, it was as big as a movie poster.
Why would you need 7 or 8 MP camera ?

I managed to snipe the last one in my fifty miles, I'm very happy with this deal. Good lens, great price.
