The following excerpt is from my online transcript:
"You say, Nero won't detect it as a writer, either.
Jill says, I'm sorry, but we can only offer support of the software that came with your drive. For support of other software, you will have to contact those software manufacturers.
Jill says, Please remove all writing software, that didn't come with the Sony drive.
You say, So Windows should read it and display it as a typical DVD reader?
Jill says, Install the bundled software.
Jill says, Take the DVD drive off the system and see if that makes a difference in reading.
You say, You mean remove the software that didn't come with the drive, then re-install it
?
You say, I did remove the other DVD drive. No change
Jill says, No, remove the software, that didn't come with the Sony drive, and leave it off.
Jill says, Install all of the latest upgrades for your BIOS and Motherboard. Please contact your system manufacturer for all the latest upgrades. If you built your own PC, check for upgrades for all major components: mother board, chip set, and graphic card.
You can usually find the latest driver on the web site of the components manufacturers.
You say, I use Nero. I do not use the Veritas. Nero is much more flexible and powerful. I'm not removing software that I have used for years.
Jill says, It will conflict with the Sony software.
You say, Why can't I remove the Sony software?
Jill says, If you have any problems trying to use Nero, you will need to contact Nero.
You say, Why can't I remove the Sony software?
You say, Not just nero. Pinnacle InstantCopy, as well.
Jill says, We also do not support Pinnacle.
Jill says, We only support the drive when using it with the bundled software.
You say, I understand that. You said the Nero conflicts with the Sony software. Apparently, so does Pinnacle. Why can't I remove the Sony software?
Jill says, You can, but we can't support the drive when you are using someone else's software.
Jill says, For support, you will need to contact Pinnacle or Nero.
Jill says, Thank you for using the Sony Technical Support chat service. In a few minutes, a transcript of your chat session will be emailed to the address that you provided at the time of login. Have a nice day.
You say, The drive should work with software other than that bundled with the drive. If not, I will be retuning this drive, and noting this matter on Anandtech/TechTV message boards. This ought to be public knowledge. More people use Nero than any Veritas software.
Jill says, It is up to the software manufacturers to build support for the drive into their software.
You say, It should be noted on the drive box
Jill says, Sony bundles software that supports the drive.
You say, Thank you. It will be returned."
What is up with this? Maybe I'm assuming too much, but shouldn't it state on the box that it only works with the bundled software?
Anyone have any trouble with Nero/InstantCopy recognizing the Sony drive as a recorder?
