I just got a call from Electronics Boutique that Sony is slashing the number of consoles that will be available at launch for the PS2. I had to go in to the store today and pay in full for the console and a game to be assured I would receive the console.

Has anyone else heard about this?

Sounds like a marketing ploy to me. I was gonna get a PS2 but with DDR motherboards and memory making their debut at about the same time I think not.

Are you sure that EB isn't screwing you over? I've never heard of a store requiring you to pay in full PLUS a game to reserve your console..:Q

No. EB is a great bunch of people, atleast by me. In my opinion PS2 will be a let down. 300 bucks plus they talk about the internet on the PS2 but you have to pay extra for the modem. Who cares if it has a DVD Player, quality is sub par and I don;t buy a gaming console for DVD capabilities.

I love my dreamcast and if XBox has a good lineup of games pre and post launch I will get that.

X Box may do very well. Think about it, any really good game that was on PC, Microsoft will buy to coming to console. You know people will be lining up to buy XBox if they have a launch lineup with Q3A, UT, Deus Ex, HL, Midtown Madness, maybe a Madden and more.

Yeah, I think getting a PS2 at launch is a bad decision anyhow. The launch lineup is less than stellar also.

You'd be better of playing your PC till X-Box comes out, now there will be an awesome gaming rig.

BUT, if you MUST have a console, i'd say go with a Dreamcast to hold you over till X-Box. You have a cheap price, lots and lots of quality games, a no lag online matchmaker and plenty of systems to go around. This coupled with your PC will keep you a dreamy gamer till next fall when the big boys come out (Gamecube and X-Box).

actually I have the PS2, and the dvd playback is definitely not subpar.
what is $300 anyway? prolly nothing, to people like you guys who buy computer hardware. Is there anything that depreciates as fast as computer hardware?

300 bucks still is alot for a console. Let's see.

Dreamcast - 149 - Out right now - Tons of great games. Can play through internet w. included modem.

PS2 - 300 - not out now - good but not great launch lineup - can play through internet but need to buy the modem for more money (on top of the 300) DVD playback (but if you want a normal remote besides the PS2 controller that is extra as well ...

Your choice.
Hmm ... I wonder which one I was leaning towards ...

I may get a PSX2 when GT2000 makes it stateside. That's the only game that's impresing me right now. The next Metal Gear I know will end up on PC so i don't care too much for that.

EB isn't screwing people over since they're the first people to
get anything, just like Dell. Sony has been known to artificially
boost the "perceived" demand of their products by undersupplying
retailers. They did that in Japan with their Pocketstation to much
success and may be trying the same with the PS2. I also recall
that Sony has threatened to delay the PS2's European launch by at
least a month.

If Sony is purposely undersupplying the PS2 then they are being
quite stupid since if the average consumer will have to wait until
next year to buy a PS2, they'll be even more likely to wait for
the Gamecube or X-Box instead.

What the PS/PS2 has over consoles like the Dreamcast is Square as a game developer. Only reason why I bought the original PS and its the only reason (besides the DVD player)why I am buying the PS2. And its not just Final Fantasy, games like Chrono Cross dont come out on PC and even if they do it is quite some time after the console version has been out.

There's that and the fact that Square (through other companies
such as Eidos) manage to produce some of the worst PC ports
imaginable.

Haven't you noticed that it has taken Microsoft nearly two years
to port MGS to the PC? Even Bleem! beat Microsoft by nearly half
a year. You'll be waiting a long time for MGS2 to come to
a PC near you...

I don't plan on ever getting a game console. Last one I had was an Atari 2600 now I like my computer too much.

But if you all are interested I read this at Toms Hardware

http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/index.html#0028

Sony upgrades PS2 DVD

According to a writer for The Register, Sony has reacted to criticisms about the quality of the DVD playback system built into the already released Japanese version of the PlayStation2. As the much-anticipated game consoles make their way toward the US and European markets, Sony has replaced the software DVD decoder with a chip-based system boasting significantly improved DVD playback.

I think Tom got it from the Register....

Maybe this is why there will be a shortage of PS2s at release??

I was at EB today and asked about the PS2 availibility. I am on good terms with most of the people there and they would not dick me around. At current, EB is unsure of their supply. It changes from day to day and the local shop does get regular calls and updates concerning the ammount of system they will get. First up, they KNOW they will not have enough PS2 at launch to fill the preorders. That is just a fact, they let WAY too many people preorder the systems with a $10 deposit. Maybe a $50 deposit would have solved this problem but anyway...

Making people pay full price up front gives them a good way to chose who to give the systems too. What is EB supposed to do on launch day when they have 120+ people in line and only 50 systems. Everyone in that line is going to have placed the $10 preorder down at different times. Giving the systems to people that already payed the ammount in full at least gives them an excuse.

I work at R-zone at Toys R us, and we have pre-ordered a ton of PS2s, enough to handle the rain checks. The price is 289.99, and employees get a 10% discount. The controllers, and memory cards are 34.99.

The PS2 comes with 1 controller, and in order to play older reg. playstation games on the PS2, you need an old playstation.

October 26 is when we have to call everybody that pre ordered it, and is when we release them.

Oh dreamcast can be purchased for 150 bucks flat price, and if you sign up for Seganet, you get a 150 dollar rebate, making the dreamcast free (cept Tax) Its kinda like the free computer deals but the drawback is the contract with the seganet provider.

"in order to play older reg. playstation games on the PS2, you need an old playstation"

I do not get it. Why would you still need a Playstation to play Playstation games on a Playstation 2?
