Quite true if you're talking about 10 years ago. Sony nowadays sucks. They no longer have the 'Sony quality' they used to have.

sony's high end is still high end and is deservedly so. they just command a premium for the name.
and i got lucky, my very first PS2 was DOA xmas morning (month after launch), but we returned it and managed to score another one somehow, and that unit is still kicking (although i never touch it since my PS3 does everything I need it to as far as games go, PS2 games play great on it).

and I'd say this situation is less of a rootkit scare, and more of a dumbass exec not thinking straight. Because honestly, who doesn't at first think the software for a thumbprint scanner (which replaces passwords and used to unlock precious secure files and the entire computer itself, depending on specific uses), should be hidden from casual browsing? This would make it harder to be found by someone casually, so it makes it more secure. It just happens to introduce the malicious threat.
different from other scenarios however, just this time it kind of makes sense.

You forgot the <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags...

Yep. The days of Sony being some huge class leader have passed. Some of their TVs are still good but not the best and when you take into account price they don;t even hit top 10 on my list.

your list is flawed ;) ... since Sony TV's cannot be beat, and the next-best (Samsung) are often not far behind in prices. The top 3 in displays tend to be Sony, Samsung, and Sharp, in that order, with some units from other manufacturers, on occasion, being better due to new tech developments that the other big 3 haven't researched.

Yeah, no. If you want the BEST in HDTVs (excluding projectors), the list goes more like:

1. Bang&Olufsen, Runco, Fujitsu
2. Pioneer
3. Sony, Samsung
4. Sharp
5. whatever else

I would tend to agree with that, although I would probably class Pioneer
and Sony as a tied second.

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but doesn't Panasonic deserve to be up there?

Pioneer shuffles around a bit, and B&O and Runco are hard-finds, considering there is NO store in Toledo (100% positive, considering I've been to all the high-end A&V stores here, not to mention all the retail stores) that carries either. Fujitsu is also a tough find, depending on the display type sought, at least considering their name (one would think their products would be featured at more stores).
and because of that, I tend to speak from experience. And glad you said excluding projectors, because short of 15k+ projectors (never even seen one), I've never seen any best the display capabilities of Sony's projectors. I've also seen nothing top the Sony displays I've auditioned, however I will admit I've never taken any serious looks at Pioneer's displays due to never having talked to Pioneer display owner.

First of all, Pioneer isn't shuffling around anywhere with their latest display. They've solidified their spot at number 2 for me. I would put Samsung right up there with Pioneer, but their 81 series LCD (Samsung's much hyped Kuro competition) failed to deliver what most were hoping for. It's a pretty big leap for LCD technology, but I'd put Pioneer's new Kuro displays above Samsung's new LCDs. Sony is LUCKY to share the same spot as Samsung. While Samsung is close to sharing the number 2 spot with Pioneer, Sony is REALLY close to sharing the number 4 spot with Sharp, and I might even bump them down to number 5 because of the clouding issues with their new XBR4/5 LCDs (yes, the same issues people were reporting on the previous Sony XBR LCDs). I wouldn't even consider Sony's new LCDs.

Secondly, I never said the BEST HDTVs are easily accessible. Runco and B&O are pretty much for blank check writers. They want the best, and the best has no price ceiling for them. If you had the money, you'd have no problems getting one. Don't get me wrong, I can't afford those TVs either, but I definitely know where they rank in PQ, and that is number 1. Fujitsu is also close to the same type of people that buy Runco and B&O displays, but you'd probably catch a glimps of those much easier than you would the other two manufactures. And of course they're usually a little cheaper.

Now if you had the BIG money, I'd consider this the holy grail for HD home theaters. The thing is BAD!

Again, if you are looking for the TOP 3 HDTVs, I wouldn't even consider Sony. Now if you are looking for the top 3 displays NORMAL people can buy, just yank out the top spot in my list. That should MAYBE put Sony in the top 3. But with the clouding issues people are reporting on the new Sony LCDs, I may just drop them entirely from my list.

There is almost no high-end sony worth the cash. Their TV's are way overpriced. Their stereo equipment is overpriced and tremendously underpowered compared to their published ratings. Often time their "100w per channel" fail to deliver anything over 30w/ch. Sony used to be a great company, now they are a shell of their former selves.

take headphones for instance, the glorified albeit discontinued MDR-10 gets an unanimous nod from everyone - teh good. Most everything else (IMO including qualia and CD3000) is teh suck. So its more like one outlier case and thousands of crappy shit for the rest.

rootkit scare
I think rootkit fiasco was a very valid threat. No one other than a sony fanboy would attemp to downplay such serious intentional and malacious security hole.

Yep I found one of my old walkmans that still worked. That was the only sony item I had that still worked. the rest were thrown out a long time ago. Yet those items were less then 3 years old yet still broke. My old roommate use to be a HUGE sony fanboy. You name it, it was sony. But after all the problems he and his parents had and the high prices i don;t think he has bought sony in years.
