Sony cuts Japanese PS2 pricing by 15%

I have my own doubts about the Register being a reputable source...but a price drop from Sony was expected. Some places already offer the PS2 for $289 and there is some speculation that they will drop to $249 by christmas. Personally I'd rather get the Gamecube than the PS2 at a mere $199.

right now till 12/26, you can get PS2 or Xbox for 210 or Gamecube for 140 at Virgin store using AE Blue (30% off everything).
 
Gee, like everyone has an AE Blue card. The official pricing is what counts, not some stupid discount works only with AE or VISA or whatever. 'cause I find no reason to register for a new CC just for the sole purpose of getting a discount.

Agreed. You make it sound like having an Amex Blue card is like having ten fingers.... Some of us prefer not to use credit cards...🙁
 
Don't expect the NA price drop till Q2 02, its not going to happen any sooner. And its pretty funny, Xbox will be the first next gen console to launch into South Korea, a gaming market just as large as Japan... But its not happening for another year. Honestly I think they should launch in South Korea and Japan at the same time and forget about the other asian countries till Q4 02, after the other larger markets are launched.
 
Well first of all, the GT3 bundle is actually a price hike. So they package in
a $5 disc and raise the price $30...

Worth noting that the "price cut" in Japan isn't really a price cut at all. What
they did is they removed the DVD remote and a few accessories from the box.
Coincidentally the price of the box dropped by the approximate price of the
accessories...

I'm tired of these tricks Sony is playing with the numbers.. phantom price cuts
and all..
 
I used to fully believe that sony was going to drop it to $199 in NA but now it's the beginning of december and both Xbox and GC have launched already. It won't drop. Most people have either 1) bought a Xbox/GC or 2) have gotten the PS2 as a present already.

Also Xbox wasn't launched in South Korea because of rampant piracy. It will launch in a year. Don't remember where I read that from.

<gasp!> I'm actually in total agreement! 😀

Then again, I'm probably a bit cynical -- as Blue isn't offered here in Iowa -- but I don't particularly care for the "hot deals" that require 10 different price matches during 10 different phone conversations with 10 different vendors, plus a few nasty mail-in rebates, to save a few bucks. But that's just me 🙂
