sony bravia vs samsung LCD TVs

I am getting ready to upgrade my Sony WEGA rear projection LCD (50") to a newer 1080p model TV.

I have looked around, and I have it narrowed down to the Sony Bravia 46", Samsung 46" (Not the 120hz model), or possibly a 52" Samsung.

Will there be any degradation in picture quality going to a bigger TV, and how to the current 60hz samsungs compare to the newer 60hz Bravias?

I am not willing to order online, I am going to be picking this up at a local place.

Thanks.

I mus vouch for the Samsung 52" LCD panels (650 series and higher). I personally own a 52" 750 series LCD TV and it is amazing! Even my friends who recently purchased flat-panel displays are impressed with the image quality of the 750.

Go to BestBuy or sears or where ever has TVs on display and compare the quality. You'll notice the Sony's and the Samsung's stand out (Samsung makes the hardware for Sony).

The nearest best buy is about 4 hours away from here, but I did look in the local sears and some other places today.

I think I might have settled on a Toshiba 52" now. A small stereo shop had one set right next to a 52" Sharp Aquous and the Toshiba looked phenominal compared to the sharp, at a nice price too. They put in a blu-ray of Dark Knight hooked to each one of them for reference.

I am still shopping around, but that Toshiba LCD looked awesome even compared to the 60hz samsung that I saw in sears.

How do the Toshibas compare. I took a look at the 52" Toshiba compared to the 46" Samsung 60hz model, and I liked the Toshiba better on image quality, but it also wasnt the same size TV.

I would have to special order a Samsung in the size that I want (around 50 inch, same size as my current TV), and I really hate special ordering something like this vs buying one locally (just for returns/support reasons).

Which model Toshiba? They have 3 in the 52" size.

52RV535U lists for $2200
52XV540U which has a 10bit panel & 120Hz, lists for $2500
52XV545U their best, which lists for $2600 Here is a review for it.

As for Samsung, Here's a review for the LN52A750. Amazon currently has it for $1989 shipped. At that price, I'd get it over the 52XV545U in a heartbeat.

AFAIK the current Samsung and Sony panels are made in the same factory.

Going forward, Sharp and Sony panels will be made in the same factory.

IMO the difference between the brands is negligible when the panels are identical.

I personally own a Sharp Aquos and couldn't be happier with it, especially for gaming as it has next to no lag (4ms).

I think it is the $2200 one, but I am going to go back there today and get the actual part number to be sure.

Be sure and post the price too.

They want $1699 for that toshiba. I am sure I can talk them down a bit, but that includes delivery and hooking it all up (not that I cant do that myself, but if they aren't going to charge anything extra for it, might as well let them manage my cables for me).

Does that include delivery & tax?

No sales tax in Oregon, but yes it includes delivery and hooking it up and setting all my other stuff up to it, as well as cable management. I will most likely buy a wall mount with it, so they include the mounting in that price as well.

Well, they delivered the Toshiba this evening and I spent a while getting everything set up, and I could not be happier with the picture on this TV. Look amazing just on standard def channels on my DirecTV, and even better on the high def channels.

Pic of the TV.

Big thumbs up to the Toshiba 52RV535U.

my experience was the opposite.
black levels on the sony were noticeably better than samsungs.

and yes, i know about calibration and torch mode. just a counter to his example.

Pray that you never need in-warranty help from Toshiba.

Did you hear about them losing the class action on DLP bulbs?

Yea, I'll def. get some money back, but I'm done buying bulbs for the TV as there is something deeper wrong with my TV. Well, I should say 'was' because I gutted the whole thing last week and chucked it out, saving the valuable parts to sell to online repair shops.

I'll get a fraction of what I paid on the TV back, but Toshiba is dead to me. I will never buy another product from them again.
