Not an HD display? Strange ... thought all the old 480 line displays were long gone.

Yes, this is not an HD display and not a hot deal. Notice that it doesn't include HDMI inputs (my guess is that it was made before HDMI existed). I'm sure that it cost $1,999 when it was first released.

great deal on a not so great deal TV. Probably liquidating their old stock.

852 x 480 Max Resolution = FAIL

I'm sure DVD and SDTV will be around for a looooong time still so If you mostly watch SDTV (standard definition TV) then it's not so bad. Plus it comes with a 2yr warranty and it's a Sony so there are actual parts and techs to fix them. Don't be so quick to shoot the deal down.

42in Plasma Display / 852 x 480 Max Resolution / Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
10000:1 Contrast Ratio / 500nit(s) Brightness
Picture-in-picture (PIP), Picture-and-picture (PAP) / 2 Years Warranty

I didn't know they made such low resolution screens at that size. With that in mind I'd say this is a terrible deal.

I did not want to bash this deal this morning but now since others have chimed in I was going to say that as the OP stated: this is a display and not a TV. It does not come with a stand, speakers or TV tuner and is only EDTV (420p). HOWEVER, $799 is still the best price on the net.

Is an HD image that much worse in a 42" EDTV? Or does it depend, quite literally, on the eye of the beholder?

An EDTV at 42" will look noticeably worse than a 720p set.

That is incorrect. An EDTV is a great display. I own a Panasonic EDTV that has served me well, and it looks great with HD material from a 6' viewing distance. I play both HD-DVDs and Blu-rays on it.

However, for 799, you can certainly find a deal on an HDTV. Just keep an eye out. Don't bite on this. Plus, I don't think Sony has even manufactured plasmas in several years - so this is definitely old stock.
