Good find! I've been looking for a Sony VCR deal. Does anyone know whether Walmart charges sales tax for California purchases? Does Walmart ever have coupons we can use?

It's Sony!
Sony stuff is always more expensive than other brands.
You pay premium for the brand and its superior quality (not really on every product).

Don't forget you're paying $45 per year for Costco membership, that Toshiba VCR is just little bit cheaper than street price, you may get it even cheaper from web when there is hot deal orcoupon.

I can recommend the new Sony SLNV51 mentioned above. Picked one up for my Dad to replace his old VCR that died and I am quite impressed with it. Lotsa features but best of all is the record quality - I'd go so far as to say that this Sony beats out the top Panasonic models in terms of recorded picture quality. BTW, I bought the Sony at Target for $99 ...

I've NV50 (bought from 800.com when it was still 129 using 20 off and msn passport 20% off and then ebates, and then sony card triple bonus points, and then some credit back),
it has a bug like a Panasonic once I bought and returned, when switching vcr/tv mode, the screen becomes quite grey, need to change to another channel on tv then change back to ch3 to get back normal color. Do you have such problem?

I've a Sharp too, it doesn't have such problem.

I paid $120 to get the NV-50 from Amazon back in October, but it was well worth it. Recording quality is awesome and the remote is very organized. I know about record quality too because I compare it to my Panasonic AG-1970 SVHS 🙂

I hate the Toshibas. They make great VCRs, but the remote controls are bass ackwards. Press play twice and the tape ejects, press stop twice and the tape plays? Maybe it's just the specific model I had from 2 years ago, but the control seems horrid.

I also have the Sony NV50 and I am quite pleased with it. No bugs as noted above. I used as a cable tuner for my non-cable ready TV, and its tuner quality is far better than my old VCR. It even tells you the name of the program and channel most of the time.
