Dell Home has the Sony SDM-S81 (18") LCD for $964.95. Apply 15% discount (can be found at F..W.....) and delivered price is $820. Go to Sony Promotions site for $100 rebate form. Final price $720. I have the Sony 15" now, can't wait to get 3 more inches. Yes, size does matter.

Don't forget to use eBates for another 2% back too, gets it to $704!

No DVI-I support, confirmed on Sony's Website;

And looks like Service/Support is not as good as what Planar offers. Sony's service is brings; in contrast, Planar got second-day replacement; two-way free shipping.

Here are the specs from Sony's website... not too shabby!

Response Time:
Rise Time: 20ms
Fall Time: 10ms

Luminance:
200 cd/m²

Contrast Ratio:
400:1

Per Sony Rebate:

"Promotions and rebates for items purchased directly from Sony through SonyStyle.com, either online or through telesales, are automatic and incorporated into the price when the order is placed. "

Is Dell qualified?

DVI vs. Analog:

I find with games it makes little difference, but with text DVI can be sharper (better sync).

THe real issue is the quality of cables you use. I have a DualHead system and one was DVI and one was analog... the analog gives me fits (interference) if I don't carefuly route it.... the DVI one can take any signal abuse I throw at it.

Downside of DVI - try getting an extension cable! The best I could do was get a REPLACEMENT cable, $60 for a 10'! My Planar came with 7 and I needed the other 3 feet.

I don't like DVI on my All-In-Wonder Radeon because it doesn't scale in some games. i.e. if a game is set to less than the native resolution, you will only get actual pixels and not a scaled out image to fill the entire screen.

I will probably pick up a Planar 18" with Svideo and mount it on the ceiling of my bedroom. Can't afford plasma but very much like the TV-on-ceiling idea.

You can change this under the display properties of your video card. (at least I can with my geforce DDR + DVI, and Radeon 8500 both using a planar 17.4")

I wonder what you have in mind?

<< Very warm deal I am waiting for the LCD price to drop even more. >>

Don't count on it. Many articles I have been reading lately point to an increase in price due to the shortage of glass used in LCDs.

Wait a couple years for the new organic flat panel monitors. Cheaper and better picture.

As good as Sony's other monitors (Trinitron CRT's) are, their LCD's sure don't live up to their company reputation, not from the ones I've seen. Samsung is the clear favorite right now when it comes to LCD's IMHO ...

Lambo. do you currently own Sony-S51.. I was planning to buy Sony-M51.. because of DVI.. which one is better in your opinion?
