Sony 16x DVD w/ Windows XP doesn't read anything!

Unless you go into it's properties and futz around with it until you can hear it spin up, it won't detect a CD in it. I have to go into the properties and open up a driver box, or change the region or something for it to detect a CD. Then it will play fine, but once I eject and put another one in I have to go through the same process. The drive is not listed in the Windows XP HCL, but it says it is Windows XP compatible on the page I bought it from futureshop.ca. Any idea what is causing this?
