Sony 16x Dual Layer DVD Burner

So I've had this Sony 16x DVD+-RW drive for about a year. It never has given me much trouble but over the last month it has not wanted to recognize DVD's. I'm talking burnt, original, none. It will, however, read/burn regular CD's just fine. I tried blowing in the drive to move any dust that might be hindering the laser.

Has anyone ever encountered this?

FYI, I just did a brand new reformat.

Your device manager recognizes your drive, right?
Drivers up-to-date right?
Have you used a cleaner DVD disk?
Your DVD installed software is?

I'm talking DVD data discs. I shouldn't need any drivers or software in order to see the drive contents. I've used a multitude of different DVD's.

its possible the dvd laser burnt out. I had a couple NEC drives that the CD laser burnt out and wouldn't read any cd but dvds read and burned fine.

Its difficult to diagnose hardware without hands-on checking.
When I insert my DVD data disk, I get an immediate response to open folder. It may be that your DVD reader is kaput.

That happened to my Sony DVD burner too. Read and burned CDs find, but didn't do a thing to DVDs 🙁 I went and got a Benq burner to replace it.
