Awesome deal. I've been watching external USB and Firewire CDRW's for a while now (> 6 mos) and they are very slow in becoming affordable. Hopefully this is a continuing trend.

Great post, I really want one of these.

The problem I see is that, of all the various computers I interact with (home, work, friends & family) the only ones that have firewire are two of mine. I have a firewire add in card and an SB Audigy in 2 of my 'puters. Everyone else has USB. It would be even cooler if this were combo firewire/usb 2.0!!! Is there an adapter for firewire to USB 2.0?:)

I snagged me one, but someone has opened the box and the bag the drive comes in. I am unable to test it. PM me if interested before I return it.

edit>> still available - warranty and possible rebate (i have my doubts)

edit>> drive has been returned to staples

got two of these in pittsburgh pa. at the banksville road store....
grabbed the last 2 unfortunately... (unless they have some in the back.... i didnt ask)
the guy behind the counter first said they didnt have any... then i stared a hole thru his feet (behind which i could see the 2 boxes in plain sight :) and he caved in and said "oh yea i guess we do."

:)

i have a feeling he was hoping they would last till he got off work.... as he didnt seem too supreised when they rang up at 80$ :)

this is a great deal you can pop out the cdrw and stick in a hard drive as easy as pie...... or you can sell the whole thing unopened on ebay for 135$

you cant get external empty firewire enclosures this nice ..... any cheaper than 95$ including shipping at say Zeehoo.com.....

great deal.... THANKS to whoever posted it :)

I don't have a receipt because I didn't purchase one unfortunately (was going to but we only had one new one left that a customer was going to pick up last night and one that was opened already) Most Staples prices are good nationwide unless it's a special manager markdown - all price changes come from corporate. Glad to know a couple people got in on this

douglassirk, let me give you a hint, you don't need to encourage ebayers. Doing so will leave fewer for the people who actually want to buy one for themselves.

Deal even gets hotter!!! There is a $30 rebate from sony that goes from 1/1/02 - 3/28/02. Get it here - Rebate Model # CRX1600L/A2

Sony's webpage states that there is a $30 rebate available but when you download the rebate form, the rebate form doesn't list the model number for being qualified.

I called sony and asked them why this model wasn't listed on the rebate form but told me that their is a rebate even though it's not listed on the form but listed on the website. The CSR suggested you print out sony's webpage showing that there is a rebate available and circle the model number and sent it along with the rebate from and bar codes and stuff.

If it works that makes it $50!!!!
