This is my first attempt at posting a deal, so I hope I'm not doing anything stupid. I hadn't seen this one yet, and wanted to give the group a heads up. Best Buy had the Sony 12x8x32 CD-RW for $229. There are then two seperate rebates: Best Buy Rebate ($30.00) and Sony Rebate ($50.00). I picked this one up and Best Buy did print out the rebate forms for me. This drive is Clone CD compatible.

Summary:

Drive Cost: $229
Best Buy Rebate: ($30)
Sony Rebate: ($50)

Total: $149

I'd be interested in hearing what the group has to say on this drive versus the Iomega 12x4x32, which now has Clone CD capability.

Hey, not too bad a deal. If you don't have burn-proof, just use Nero and set the RAM buffer to something huge. Everyone has plenty-O-RAM these days, right? From all the RAM deals?

Zap,

I just got my first burner, the Cendyne deal (6x4x32, really a Ricoh 7063A). It comes with Nero. I have 448MB RAM (yes, due to the great Kingston PC100 256MB deal at buy.com). What would be a good 'huge RAM buffer' for me? Thanks.

Well, I think the default for Nero 5 is 20MB RAM for a minimum of 128MB system RAM. You can probably go 100MB or more, leaving you with 348MB RAM for other stuff. Or, 200MB cache, leaving you with 248MB RAM for other stuff. Either way, plenty-o-RAM for everything else.

Oh, BTW, even with a RAM buffer, if anything stops your computer completely, like hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the "Close Program" screen, you'll probably still get a coaster. I don't know how BurnProof deals with this.

This is a great drive. I bought it a few months back.

Works great with CD Clone 2.8.3.1.
Supports all kinds of new features. VERY FAST.

It's a SONY.

No problems with BURN PROOF. This drive has 4meg buffer and I never had a coaster that was due to a buffer underun.

if staples has it you could pricematch and use a $40 off $150 coupon and just send in one rebate (to sony)

I don't think a big buffer in Nero will stop a buffer underrun if the processor and data pathways are tied up by opening a big program. Burn proof will protect in these situations.
