Songbird 1.0 available today

I've seen quite a few 'what can I use other than Itunes' posts on here.

I've used Itunes, Foobar, Winamp, and Media Monkey, and quite honestly I've yet to find the 'perfect' music player.

So far, Songbird is the closest thing I've seen. It's from some of the people that originally brought us Firefox, and it's built with the same ideas - so yes, there are plenty of add-ins for everyone.

A few highlights - can play tracks purchased w/Itunes (with a plug-in), can sync w/Ipods and other MM players.

Check it out

They've certainly come a long way. I'll have to check out version 1.0; I stopped paying attention to them a while back, but it sounds like they've made good progress.

I tried it a few days ago and it was okay but I still prefer WMP. I like the plugins though, over time those could win me over.

I like SongBird. It's my 3rd choice player(after Foobar and VLC), but it's nice to use on occasion. I look up songs quite a bit for my daughters music class. Being able to search for, and play songs in the same window is convenient.

i'll try it, but it better kick butt if it's going to replace my foobar.

edit: why does it have millions of plugins like firefox? why isn't the good stuff built in?

1> I don't think it's gonna be kicking any Foobar ass ;^)

2> Good stuff is in the eye of the beholder. One person's good stuff is another persons bloat

Wait a sec, you're questioning Songbird's plugins? Doesn't foobar use plugins for virtually everything other then a basic songlist plus playback engine? Seems to me Songbird has quite a bit more features w/o any plugins.

I just don't get Songbird. I like Winamp. And I like Media Player Classic. But to have a browser window with a music player? Well call me a caveman, but I just don't see the point.

Perhaps it's because I don't like Foxytunes. Is this some personal preference, or am I missing something? 😕

You can search for downloadable/listenable music, and then play it from 1 place. It's convenient for refreshing memory on what a song sounds like. My daughter uses it to listen to music for school band.

The plugins make it damned nice.
MashTape, Concert etc are very nice.
This will really help in making my weekly radio show.

Edit: My only wish is that it ripped and found the album/artist/album info itself.

The lyrics plugin is handy, but Songbird is crashing a lot on my PC. I can't even drag the playback slider to fast forward a song without crashing.

the last couple versions of foobar have added a lot of goodies. i don't know if plugin material was brought into the official package or what, but it's very good now.

It's always been very good, but it's always been because of the plugins, even if they are included with the default download.

After seeing the above discussion, I've got a good mind to try out foobar now. I'll bookmark it for the time being.

I like the interface, integrated scrobbling through Last.fm, and the plugins (the Mashtape plugin is awesome, I especially like the Photos viewer that seems to get quality photos from all over the web) but it should not take a media player 3 seconds to catch up with you on the seek bar.

I very often tend to 'skip to the good parts' when listening to songs on the PC. This is the only media player I can think of which can't handle seeking.
