son is giving up soda

my son just returned from getting shaving cream and announced that he's giving up soda.

he's going to start drinking gatorade instead. his reasoning is that gatorade doesn't have HFCS. He's 22, has 3 jobs, so I won't argue too much.

Is gatorade any worse for him than soda?

I'd be more concerned about your son being one of those people.

HFCS or not, soda and Gatorade are basically sugar water... I'd always been told that Gatorade is basically Koolaid with salt.

if he's interested in being healthy, stick with water or un/lightly-sweetened iced teas.

I'm all for progress, personally. Is water a better replacement? Sure - but Gatorade is way better for you than almost any soda. Way less calories and sugar. Step in the right direction, no matter what the naysayers here shriek.

There is no conclusive evidence that ingesting HFCS is worse than ingesting cane sugar. The only benefit to Gatorade is that he gets back a lot of the salt he'd sweat out if he were on a varsity football team. If he isn't working out or sick with a fever, drinking Gatorade is basically the same as drinking soda.

You don't need sports drinks unless you really workout hard and for a long duration. 🙄

You're missing the point. He was drinking soda before. Whether you "need" it or not, its still a positive step. Gatorade is half the calories of Coke - and all of that coming from sugar. Is drinking water still better? Sure. Is the HFCS reasoning 🙄 worthy? Sure. However, that is all irrelevant to the fact that Gatorade is better for you than Coke, by a significant margin.

This.
I drink Gatorade when I ride cross country for like 20+K, but for sitting around, never, ever.

I drink milk, tea, water, orange juice when at home. That's it.

For each gatorade drank its recommend to have 3 or 4 same size containers of water. Gatorade has the same calories as soda almost unless its the stuff with aspertaine.

Coke has roughly 11.67 calories / ounce. Gatorade has 6.25. The Gatorade with aspartame is about 2.5.

Sugar content is lower but not zero, depends on qty, sugar intake might still be higher than recommended daily diet, but definitely less harmful than Coke. I drink Zevia when I get soda craving...
