Might want to check your math again there, Sparky.

My math is good... yours not so much.
What matters for what you stated is the pH not the molarity.
The molarity does help determine what the ph should be though.

Something with a pH of 12 will require a lower volume to increase the pH to say 7 than would something with a pH 7.5.
That falls under very basic chemistry.

Go ahead, do the math. Remember, pH=-log([H+]), and for an aqueous solution, [H+]*[OH-]=10^-14. Assume that the soda is a simple solution of HCl, pH 2.5 (the pH of Coke Classic). Since NaOH is a strong base, it will essentially dissociate completely and be a solution of 10 mM [OH-] that you are titrating into the "soda". The Tris is more complex due to its buffering ability, plus I started you out with a pre-pH'd solution@7.5, but this should get you started:

It's a well known fact that successful people drink extremely high quantities of Diet Coke, at least that seems to be the trend I've seen. Also, I freaking love Diet Coke.

I am to lazy and tired to do math right now... maybe tomorrow.
It may have also been way to long since I touched chemistry since I tested out of all the chemistry I needed at the university I went to. :(
Plus I am bored. :p

diet coke can be indirectly as bad or worse than regular coke. it increases cravings, so you gorge on surgary and/or fatty foods.

ever seen the picture of health drinking diet soda?

A happy compromise between Gatorade and water might even be Emergen-C.

Going by the 2 per day limit of Emergen-C that eits posted, I would NOT ingest more than 1000mg of Vitamin C in a day. That's already plenty of ascorbic acid; taking more just makes pH levels overly acidic for little benefit.

It won't cause a dangerously high pH level, but it's not normal to the body.

This
You're missing the point. He was drinking soda before. Whether you "need" it or not, its still a positive step. Gatorade is half the calories of Coke - and all of that coming from sugar. Is drinking water still better? Sure. Is the HFCS reasoning  worthy? Sure. However, that is all irrelevant to the fact that Gatorade is better for you than Coke, by a significant margin.
Plus this
its got what plants crave

Diet sodas have synthetic sweeteners that metabolize into formaldehyde that eventually causes cancer. They also actually accumulate fat.

There is nothing "diet" about a diet soda except for the replacement of natural sugar with synthetic sweeteners.

Oh God, please...

There is nothing to actually support any of that drivel in anything like normally consumed quantities of soda. Saying it "causes cancer" is imbecilic at best and dangerous at worst.

As far as "they accumulate fat", also total BS and without scientific evidence. In FACT, there is absolutely no scientific study showing any true link between diet soda and weight gain. The closest that has come, and this is even highly speculative, is that diet soda may increase one's appetites and cravings for sweetened (read; unhealthy) junk food and candy, which could lead to weight gain. But even that is highly debatable in the scientific community.
Nothing in the soda itself does.

Do the research and stop perpetuating ignorant, foolish myths.

Your body has evolved over thousands of years to know how to digest real food. You can turn your body into an experimental petri dish if you wish. No problem here, except that your future medical bills will most likely become a public liability. Hence my desire to educate the closed-minded.

Why not make his own ice tea? It's easy and taste so much better than that sweet stuff you buy.

You have full control of what's in it.

Lemon (freshly squeezed, if possible) or any other unadulterated fruit juice, 1/4 tsp. baking soda, stevia or xylitol (sweetened to taste,) water (filtered if possible,) is many times healthier than Gatorade or any electrolyte drink.

Wow, that sounds terribly disgusting. You had me until you added a minor abrasive and artificial sweeteners (even if stevia is plant derived, it still tastes HORRIBLE).

I can prove diet pop causes weight gain. Just look at people drinking diet pop, a lot of them are fat. :)

I used to love being a server and seeing people get eggs and steak and then a diet coke. That diet is going to really help you there buddy.

Are you seriously concerned about the fact that it metabolizes into formaldehyde? When you eat a tomato the same thing happens only several times more formaldehyde is produced. So if what you're saying is correct tomatoes must be causing far more people to get cancer than diet soda.

If you are more comfortable with Alka-Seltzer, which is near the equivalent, try it. However, it also contains aspirin and too much bicarb.

The whole point is to buffer year’s worth of dietary acids to assist the body in reversing the entire process.

Otherwise, the more unbuffered dietary acids, the more the human body dumps (from the teeth, bones, muscle and tissue) alkaline minerals (such as calcium and magnesium) into the blood in order to keep it at optimal range. Body fat also accumulates in order to store all of that acid.

Not only is a potential there for osteoporosis, but developing: diabetes, kidney diseases and more life threatening arterial calcification, heart problems etc.

The liver, kidneys and pancreas can become overwhelmed trying to process and filter excess acids and toxins. All three organs also assist in neutralizing acids: the liver produces bile, the kidneys produce bicarbonate, the pancreas produces enzymes.

BTW, some stevias taste more horrible than others. I like the Now brand.

Additionally, xylitol tastes identical to sugar. Though since xylitol is a sugar alcohol it has a much lower glycemic index compared to sugar. It's also unfermentable and therefore considered 'tooth friendly,' unlike sugar.

The pH of Emergen-C is formulated to be near neutral.

Sure it is. That is the picture perfect example of a healthy low carb atkins meal. You WILL lose weight if you eat egg and steak and diet soda all day.

I'd be more concerned about your son being one of those people.

HFCS or not, soda and Gatorade are basically sugar water... I'd always been told that Gatorade is basically Koolaid with salt.

if he's interested in being healthy, stick with water or un/lightly-sweetened iced teas.

Good luck finding unsweetened iced tea unless you make it yourself.

Personally, I can't stomach gatorade. It upsets my stomach when I exercise. I just drink water or soda water (carbonated water-no sugar).
