Who knows where MCSE will be in 4 years. Your college decision is great, but you may wish to change any respective certifications in a few years.

Experience is where it counts, YOU MUST co-op in college.
MCSE is a test any book worm, can study and pass. However real world experience is worth a 1000x more.

Figure out what type of company/type of CE you want to do, and get a job there.

Straight up. I laugh at the number of fools with MCSE who can't do squat with NT/2K.

Good advice above. You need the degree to move ahead, but real world experience gets you ahead in the computer field. I have a couple of friends that work for a contractor in town, each making a more than fair living, neither with any college, much less a degree. They got there through practical work experience.

An MCSE has become a good certification to prove you have basic computer skills, but most businesses will quiz you to make sure you know how NT/2000 reacts, and not necessarily how Microsoft says it will.

As for salaries, it's highly dependent on where you live. In Atlanta, and I think RoadRuner will back me up on this, just out of college with very little experience will net you about 35K. It's possible, but not easy, to live on that here. You can probably make more elsewhere, but be sure to check the CPI to make sure you can live there for what they are paying you.

A good NT person with 3-4 years exp makes $60-70K/year.

Entry level (out of college) you won't get squat.

$35k/year is about what a retail store manager makes. Sucks. you'd have to have a roommate or live in the ghetto to survive on that.

If you have real world experience, co-op or otherwise you might see a $10-15K increase on that $35K figure.

get involved in projects, which have to do with your major, intern (asap) and co-op if possible.

Btw, many folks don't differentiate between CS and CIS degrees any more. very few. CE is a much harder degree, and you'll probably make similar pay 🙂 sucks.

where the heck do yall go to school...the avg starting salary for a CMPE graduating from georgia tech is like 49k..notice i stress average. Anything less, you are getting smacked around.

Salary doesn't mean jack unless you take locale into consideration.

LastKnight: The MCSE is a cert that proves "you have basic computer skills." You have got to be kidding me? I'm no MCSE advocate (finishing my MCSD), but to say that any average guy who tinkers w/ his box can get his MCSE is rather myopic, and absurd.

thats what im sayin YOYO... was told by MIS co-op crdinator today that this years MIS seniors are averaging around 55k.. and those with less than 55k are getting serious benefits to compensate
