Sometimes when I'm bored I like to randomly explore homes on Zillow.

Thats nice but I'd need a service to take care of the lawn. OR, if I were retired I guess I'd install a shack and buy a rider mower.
Basement is big enough it could either be storage, or a nice game room. Maybe set up a driving simulator or flight simulator.

That's a nice home. IWhere I live in Southern NJ we have condos that are so close to each other that you could literally see your neghbor use the bathroom.ZERO privacy. No huge lawns. Just people massed together like mice. And, those condos are selling for $750k.

Basic boring kitchen, hate the wood stove, nothing spectacular about the interior.
That's pretty common in some areas. I'm not sure about the logic of semi cheesey cabinets and a very cold look, but I've seen it often. The stained trim in the rest of the house just doesn't work.

Back on topic, zillow is a pretty good tool for shopping. It's handy to be able to check out houses in areas your interested in moving to. I've shopped areas all over the US looking for my retirement home.

You don't want to move there. High crime, home of the KKK, all lead water pipes, and the plutonium mill right down the road leaks a lot.

Those reasons might explain some of the brain-dead Trump supporting rednecks... :p

I looked there a couple of years ago after neffing with Toker who lives in/near Memphis. I was shocked at how much house you can get for so little money.

I was there a year or so back, really nice small town, other than the KKK and that plutonium plant. It's in the top spot for my retirement. I plan on buying up wind of the plant and learning the secret handshake to avoid problems.

Even if I were rich I still dont think I'd like the city. A penthouse on 5th avenue just isnt that attractive to me. I'd rather have a big ranch in the country, with horses and dogs.

Its not bad, it just doesnt interest me.

I'll take that penthouse in Manhattan that would probably come with a country house in upstate NY (basically it would be easy to afford one if you can afford that penthouse) as a getaway for whenever - any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Best of all worlds.

Realtor?! Only n00bs look at houses on the market. Everything's been prettied up to hide defects and accentuate the positive aspects. Just walk into various houses and check them out. If you see one you like, make an offer. Everything's for sale. The only question is price.

Yeah, it's super easy to hide home defects by taking pictures at the right angle. People who are home shopping without doing physical inspections because of Covid are insane.

Property is cheap near you guys!

Near me...

1021 acres for 9.75 million pounds sterline. Current exchange rate makes it !$12.8 Million, or US$12,509/acre. Currently, my county assesses my 1/4 acre lot at US$30K, or ten times that property, welshbloke.

The thing about being rich is that you don't stay in the same play ear round. You own several places, like a good little rich boy, and then when you get tired of one place move to the next one and so on and so forth.

no offense, but I would prefer the "cheaper" fiefdom that Welshbloke posted over wherever/whatever it is that you live.

...of course, it would be useful to consider the annual cost of maintaining those 1k acres to your 1/4 of an acre.

Part of me want to buy $1 million plus mansion. But another part of me don't because of all the work that's required maintaining and up keeping nice property like that. Plus, once you get to $1 million plus range for a home, your potential buyer pool shrinks rapidly while any potential buyer is ultra picky. In metro Atlanta, the same $1 million plus home bought 15-20 years ago is still only selling for similar price today for the most part. Meanwhile, cheaper $200-300k homes have doubled in price and value.

It's nice to be able to live under the radar and live in regular house in normal neighborhood with no gate and security guard. That's something under appreciated. My older cousin lives in $1 million plus house on a golf course country club. It's pain in the ass to go visit him because I have to drive through the gate security every time and have to show my ID to the security guard and be on the list. Which is why I rarely go visit him.

Why buy a house with the intent to sell it, unless that's your business? Like buying a car based on resale value rather than repairability :\

At any rate, easier to just buy a plot of land somewhat near civilization and just build a house, that way it can be whatever you want, for whatever price you want.
