MOORESBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper and a driver he was detaining were killed Monday night when the trooper’s brother, also a trooper, hit a stopped patrol vehicle as he arrived to help with a traffic stop, officials said.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. during a traffic stop in the Mooresboro area, the Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Trooper James Horton was responding to help his brother, Trooper John Horton, with a traffic stop when he lost control and hit the stopped patrol vehicle, which in turn struck Trooper John Horton and the detained driver on the roadside, officials said.

Trooper John Horton, a 15-year veteran, was taken to a hospital, where he died, officials said. The detained driver, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper James Horton was treated at a hospital and released.

It’s not yet known whether the crash was weather-related, patrol spokesperson First Sgt. Christopher Knox said in an email.

Car accidents are the number one killer of police.

I know why they do it, but they should discontinue the practice of talking to people between cars, if anyone hits the police car at highway speeds anyone standing between the cruiser and the civilian's car is going to get messed up. Lights are good enough now and with more cops wearing body cams, they should practice standing to well to the side or talking in the cruiser.

I remember seeing a video on cops or similar show where the cop made the person talk to him on the other side of the side barrier and said "with how many people speed through here not paying attention, I don't want us to be crushed if someone hit my car" seconds later a semi plowed into the back of the cruiser. Would've easily killed both of them.

Yeah, last time I had to step out of my vehicle to talk to an officer, we sat in the front of his cruiser.

Weather related? Sounds like he was going too damn fast if he killed two people. You know, something cops write us tickets for all the time. Speeding tickets or going too fast due to weather conditions.

Also, having your brother as backup sounds like a really bad idea.

yeah I saw more than one article showing how coronavirus very quickly became the number one killer of cops.
Interestingly, a sizable chunk of them flat out refused the vaccine. To the point more than a few were actually fired over it.

Dude, I'm not saying it was reasonable. Obviously he lost control of his vehicle and it shouldn't have happened, people want to speculate on why, maybe he's rushing to his brother for some reason. That's it. Just speculation.

Why are they making traffic stops if road conditions are hazardous?

Hazardous road conditions don't immediately mean police stop working. In fact, it's their job to maintain safe roadways in bad weather.

We need more information before we can just say who did what right or wrong, and JAQing off won't help.

That said, I'm under the impression that NC doesn't have a big budget for bad weather road treatment. And in my anecdotal experience, not in NC, in GA, driver's in bad weather didn't change their habits much. As a Masshole used to bad weather driving, I got the eff off the road when I was there because they scared me.
