So I'm having some system issues that is stopping me from completing any work. It's critical to get this fixed asap. So I shoot out an email to IT with a screenshot of the issue. I alt + print screen the window with the issue and paste it into the body of the email and sent it out. The boss replies to me railing on my for filling up his inbox with a 3MB email. Sigh. :(

edit: He got the email too because he's in the group email which I CC'd to as I need to do this for auditing purposes.

I would flame you also for doing this.

Paste the pic into mspaint, save as JPG. Now you have the file size down to 150KB. So simple a child could do it.

Let me guess, png? noob. You should have saved the image as a jpeg which would only be a few hundred k.

Well, hopefully your boss hit 'reply all' when emailing you back so everyone knows what a douchenozzle he was for complaining about a very relevant, and critical attachment.

Sorry, but, in this case, the boss was right. Send a smaller file next time.

BTW, how many other people got this 3mb file? Your sys admin must love you.

wow I had no idea mspaint would save it so compressed. For some reason I thought older versions would make it huge (maybe gif?).... my laptop doesn't have any photo apps otherwise so I always just wordpad-ed every image to save. When I have to send, I didn't think I could do anything but inline paste, resulting in the large file size email.

Anyway, it would be wise for new windows versions to realize an alt-printscreen and ask if you want it compressed.

I'm aware of the extra steps I could take to minimize the file size but if he set up his outlook correctly, he could have emails moved into his larger HDD as they come in instead of keeping them in the inbox. Secondly, when he has an issue, he does the same freggin thing.

1. Why should he reconfigure his e-mail program for you?
2. Why did you leave the second part out of the OP? That would change things (a little).

And, remember, he is the boss; Do as he says, not as he does.

So you were aware, and blame him for not seeing up his outlook correctly in your eyes? Jesus man, just take it and move on. You're funny on this forum, don't become a whiny bitch.

I'm not sure whether I hate this more, or "screenshots" that are pasted into Word docs. Probably the latter.

sigh, ok I accept my fault in this, I didn't even realize it would be 3 MBs initially. This is the first time I sent a screenshot since I usually just describe the issue but this one is different. I didn't think it would be an issue since everyone does the same thing, I just happened to have sent it on my bosses final MBs.

If everyone else yadda yadda :p
It's just one of my pet peeves.
As a developer, I will say that we also appreciate having error text copy/pasted as well, if applicable.

1. He shouldn't do it for me, he should do it for himself if he doesn't want to get these type of issues. His box fills up quite a lot but he doesn't seem to do anything about it. I've never had a maxed inbox because I don't want to miss important emails so I set it up so that all emails automatically get saved to the HDD. For someone like him who receives a lot more emails that I don't, it should be more of a reason to do it.

2. I honestly didn't think 3MB of anything would be a big issue that it would backfire on me here. More so since everyone here at work does it when they need to send screenshots. If someone had mentioned to me(since it seemed to touch his nerve) that they didn't want screenshots mailed in this manner they could have told me when I started because I do know how to minimize file size but again, everyone does it so I didn't take the extra steps.

Correction, I've never sent a screenshot with emails. I normally use another internal messaging system to do work and I do the same thing(when sending screens) there but there are no limits so no one has ever complained about it. But this system was down so I shot an email to tech and well you know what happened from there.

how about saving the picture in a central location and just provide a link?

our email is set up so that anything over 2mb won't go out until after 6pm.
but i'm glad we don't have a quota anymore in email.

that just made me think of this quote

George: Was that wrong? Should I have not done that? I tell you I gotta plead ignorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices and I tell you people do that all the time.
