Sometimes I just can't stand where I live

To preface, I don't like taxes as much as the next person, but what is being proposed (and SUPPORTED by many in my county) could rank up there as one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

About a year ago, my county (Allegheny County, Pennsylvania -- the one housing Pittsburgh and its immediate suburbs) enacted a "Drink Tax" to help keep our public transit system from completely collapsing. It is rather steep (10% + 7% sales tax added to any alcoholic drink purchased in a bar) and has a bunch of bars and people up in arms. Businesses, especially those situated down the street from a neighboring county, have been complaining of lost business and what not, but the majority of them have had an immeasurable loss in the last year (as taken from the news).

Fast forward to yesterday-- the county council approved a measure to be put on the ballot in November: Either keep the drink tax, or eliminate the drink tax for a rise in property tax (between 10%-20%).

I can usually wrap my head around things, but this logic COMPLETELY baffles me. The tax is inevitable, but taxing something that affects EVERYONE MORE instead of just people that partake in what some may call entertaining and unnecessary activities just seems completely outlandish. Watching the interviews of people on the news last night made me cringe at the complete stupidity of these supporters. Granted, a rise in property taxes doesn't affect the 35-years-old-and-still-living-in-mommy's-basement crowd as much as the extra $.20 on a beer does, but still you'd think these people would have even a tiny bit of common sense.

well, at least you can drink for cheaper when you go into a depression over the thousands of dollars increase in prop tax.

The "eliminate the drink tax" group (which consists of mostly bar owners) needed 20,000 signatures to put it up for a referendum... and they got it easily.

They should vote to keep the drink tax and then have all the bars move 1 county over. That'll teach em.

So let me get this straight - only people that drink use the public transit system?

If the tax *has* to be there (different arguement entirely), it makes more sense for it to be in general sales taxes or property taxes, or even income taxes, than some stupid drink tax.

What they should start doing is charging the people that use the public transportation, or charge them more. They're the ones using it, they should pay for it.

Yeah...we had a bill here last year to increase sales tax to help out the bus!!! HELP THE BUS!!!

HEY FUCKERS!! YOU RIDE IT, YOU PAY FOR IT!

Of course it passed because of all the dumbfuck indigents. If they honestly can't afford say an extra $0.50 a day or so to help pay for shit they use that takes them to their jobs, etc. Well then fuck them.

Okay I'm done.

Riding in the bus down the boulevard
And the place was pretty packed (Yeah!)
Couldn't find a seat so I had to stand
With the perverts in the back
It was smelling like a locker room
There was junk all over the floor
We're already packed in like sardines
But we're stopping to pick up more, look out!

This is true. Thanks to Rob "Meathead" Reiner, we smokers in Kahleeforneeya are taxed to fund after-school programs for low income kids.
People are more prone to vote for a tax that doesn't directly affect them; the non-bar drinkers in PA, and the non-smokers in Kahleeforneeya...
You want to levy a $100 per bottle tax on wine to fund a study of the mating habits of the South American wombat? Sure, I don't drink wine, so I'm good with that...;)

You supported a tax on alcohol to fund something completely unrelated to alcohol; you probably supported that tax because it didn't affect you.

And you call it outlandish when people support spreading that tax out to everyone instead of punishing drinkers for no reason other than that they're an easy target?

There is something wrong with you.
