Like you mentioned in your post, credit cards are quite expensive for stores to accept. Also, it is true that Discover is one of the most expensive cards. However, Amdskip got it 100% right: Walmart (including Sam's Club) made a special deal with Discover to reduce the fee. Proof

Instead of the standard 1% (which can be doubled to 2%), "the reward percentage applied to calculate the accrued Cashback Bonus for purchases made at BJ's Wholesale Club, Costco and Sam's Club, including any purchases made at these warehouse clubs' Internet sites and Wal-Mart (including any Wal-Mart Internet sites and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets and Supermercados Amigo stores), will be a fixed rate of .25% (.0025)."

Think of the billions spent at Walmart/Sam's Club. Then think of how much Discover saves by not giving the full cash back on those purchases. We are talking major, major bucks here. In return, Discover cuts Sam's Club credit card fees so that Discover is the cheapest.

CliffsNotes:
[*]Discover gives lower fees to Sam's Club in return for:
[*]1) Customers at Walmart and Sam's Club don't get full cash reward.
[*]2) Sam's Club gives exclusive rights to Discover.

yeah, i read something about that way back when they lowered it to .25%. been using 1% rebate visa since then.

now Sam's offer's their co-branded discovercard, much like the Costco Amex. (ie: Sam's Discover) with up to 2% rebate. no idea what the catch (if any) is.

don't know if it's been said, but you can use a debit card at sams.. i did it the other day.. my first trip there.. it was exciting!

the catch is you can't redeem is like the normal discovercard..... i work for DC and my friend used to work for Sams... The Sams DC is automatically credited while with a normal DC, you can redeem your cashback a couple of different ways...

I do have a question though, i recently started getting a LOT of CC offers from Providian and Capital One with rediculous rates.... how can I get these to stop coming to me?

Well, Costco only takes American Express.

Guess wholesale is just like that.

Don't get mad - get glad.

And Costco used to only take Discover.
