Somethings that's been bothering me

WTF? The Card that costs most for businesses to accept (by far, last I checked was 3.9% and .30 transaction fee vs. the 1-1.9% and .15 transaction fee of visa/mastercard) is the only card they accept. I had a Discover Card once, the consant junk mail, and sales calls drove me up the frickin wall. The only other credit card company that even begs to comare that type of hastle is Capital One, thier "No hastle" card kept my post box full of crap mail from them and the phone rang at least 3 times an evening with those morons.

only reason it bothered me is I forgot my checkbook yesterday, and had to go back today to buy the cart load of stuff I needed because they wouldn't take my mastercard, visa, or amex card. (and yes I know, my fault for forgetting my checkbook, but who carries checkbooks around all the time these days anyway?)

edit, before those who read too much into common terms, bothered does not equal angry. it just means bothered, as in confusion by a minor thing that has no real understanding as to the backwardness of a situation.

They must have negotiated a lower rate with Discover for being the exclusive card for Sam's Club. It's always been Discover at Sam's for as long as I can remember.

So you forgot a valid method of payment for the store you are in and it's someone else's fault?

Big surprise there.

thanks for the thread crap, you who don't read the entire post., I actually said it was my fault dumb@ss.

amdskip is probably right, I didn't think about negotiating with cc companies that way between the big guys, small stores don't stand a chance, you just get what they offer for network uses when accepting credit cards.

It wasn't a thread crap when your title is "something that's been bothering me" as if it's a store's fault for choosing to carry one card over the other.

I just went to Sams yesterday and used my Visa. Its a check card and had to use it as a debt card though.

my bank charges me when I use my check card as debit

stupid question, how else would you use a check card??

I don't get any spam from Discover and I've had it for 5 years. I tried to dispute some charges recently, though (sheisty rental car company), and discover was not helpful at all.

Sears used to only take Discover, of course I think Sears owned Discover , so that is kind of self explanatory.

😕

Find a new bank.

One thing that is handy with Sam's Club is that they take their own credit line. They attach that that credit line to the member card already, so as long as you have your member card, you always have a credit card to pay with (in case you forget your Discover) I hate checks so I signed up as a backup.

I know that's the case with Costco. They have negotiated about a 50% discount from the typcial Amex merchant fees as a result of having Amex as the exclusive CC as well as some other cobranding and joint marketing initiatives. In true Costco fashion, these savings ultimately get passed onto the customer.

yah, you can either sign a paper slip as regular visa, or use pin as debit. Stores get charged depending on how you use it. Thats why sams only allows is as a debit card.

I always use debit at Sams.

I don't get bothered via mail or telephone about my Discover account.

I do get "convenience checks" in the mail from Capital One, but that's only because I have yet to request them to stop sending them. And I don't get phone calls from them either.

Although I do get a call about 3 or 4 times a week from some 800 number having to do with my Playboy subscription. I haven't answered this call for weeks, but they are very persistant.

For a few months I used my MasterCard debit with no problems. Then they extended the Sam's Club credit to me. Now this is what I use.

Sounds like chevy chase bank. That's why I'm closing that crappy account.

Like you mentioned in your post, credit cards are quite expensive for stores to accept. Also, it is true that Discover is one of the most expensive cards. However, Amdskip got it 100% right: Walmart (including Sam's Club) made a special deal with Discover to reduce the fee. Proof

Instead of the standard 1% (which can be doubled to 2%), "the reward percentage applied to calculate the accrued Cashback Bonus for purchases made at BJ's Wholesale Club, Costco and Sam's Club, including any purchases made at these warehouse clubs' Internet sites and Wal-Mart (including any Wal-Mart Internet sites and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets and Supermercados Amigo stores), will be a fixed rate of .25% (.0025)."

Think of the billions spent at Walmart/Sam's Club. Then think of how much Discover saves by not giving the full cash back on those purchases. We are talking major, major bucks here. In return, Discover cuts Sam's Club credit card fees so that Discover is the cheapest.

CliffsNotes:
[*]Discover gives lower fees to Sam's Club in return for:
[*]1) Customers at Walmart and Sam's Club don't get full cash reward.
[*]2) Sam's Club gives exclusive rights to Discover.

yep Sears bought Dean Witter and founded Discover in 84. But the Costco only takes Amex so its not the only store that takes one credit card.
